  • The Undersea World of Jacques Cousteau

It's a good time to celebrate this great TV series as it will be the centenary of Cousteau's birth on June 11th. I do hope one of the channels does a tribute.

My family were always glued to the episodes as they went out in the 70s. Cousteau was an early pioneer of marine ecology, and I can still hear that amazing voice of his narrating the exploits of his crew aboard their boat, Calypso.

There are so many links I could point to, but here is one with a good selection of photos:

Anyone else remember watching this series?

Yes I remember it well! We were lucky enough to own a colour TV and I will always remember the blues, greens and yellows and all the coral and angel fish! Also the bubbles and black flippers of the underwater cameramen, so relaxing as well.

I could quite happily watch them all now.

I wonder what became of the Calypso? Is she still serviceable?

Search Wiki for "RV Calypso". The boat's history is hugely complicated, ...and quite sad.

Thanks for the info Marine Boy. Yes it is a sad story, but, at least it is in storage and not lying at the bottom of the ocean?

I shall be looking for more Cousteau footage now.

Did they do a tribute? I don't remember seeing one.

Sorry Jacqueline. Only just spotted your post. There was no TV tribute that I noticed. But Radio 4 broadcast 'The Hidden World of Jacques Cousteau' on Thursday 12th. Alas, that means you've missed it on iPlayer by a day!

              Noooooooooooooooo!

I saw that The Life Aquatic with Steve Zissou was on tv last night. Bill Murray was a big fan of Jacques Cousteau.

Going slightly off track, do you remember when Phil Cool used to do Hans and Lotte Hass?

I love that song, it got stuck in my head long ago, especially the 'yodelling' bit at the end. It always seemed to be played on the Terry Wogan show just before I had to catch the school bus (which is odd considering I hated school yet still associate the song with good things.)

I loved watching the Undersea World every week and being fascinated by the whole diving thing as well as the beautiful fish and sea creatures. Happy memories.
