Tv series in the 70s with a headless ghost..

Please could someone help me with a tv programme that was out in the 70s and it started off with a young boy at the bottom of the stairs and he was looking up at a headless ghost.I know its not much to go on but I cant remember anything else.Thankyou.

Thats what I was told by someone recently but also told it wasnt out in the70s-i think it was a series?

It certainly was in the 70's (1974)
As it scared the bejezzus out of me as a kid

I think the confusion over when it was hightower72, is because it's been adapted so many times. I'm sure the one you're thinking of is the one sixtyten mentioned. It's certainly the one I remember, especially the bloodstains that just won't go away (Vanish hadn't been invented then). It scared me too, most things in the 70's did.

I remember a version of the canterville ghost starring David Niven.It was unbelievably lovely to watch.
