    Re: Saturday afternoon tv

Drama wise we had the excellent "The Tripods" obviously the older versions of Classic Doctor Who, you would sometimes have the odd Disneytime cartoons usually bits of major disney films joined together lasting 20mins or so.

Saturday for me also included beadles about and the generation game with larry grayson, then onto Juliet Bravo.

I used to watch Metal Mickey on a Saturday afternoon. And the Pink Panther cartoon.
        Heaven knows I'm miserable now.

I remember Metal Mickey used to be on in the early afternoon in the early 80s and later on A.L.F. Those are the two that stick in my mind

Yep im part way through rewatching both tripod series on my ipod. im up to near the start of series 2, theyve left that grape crushing farm owned by the scottish woman and her 8 daughters...must say though the series is a lot more "filler" than i remember, seems to be dragging on for aages.

Didnt they run dallas or dynasty on a saturday? i remember they used to alternate between Knight rider, charlies angels, manimal, streethawk, blue thunder .....etc type programmes in the half 5 slot.

ITV1's weekend schedule planners these days don't have a clue and don't know what they're doing IF the have to rely on Columbo, Simon Cowell, James Bond all the time. At least Channle five's got a couple of decent films on tomorrow afternoon.

As soon as Grandstand or World of Sport came on you knew it was time to go off and play.

Early afternoon on ITV in the late '70s/early '80s (after the big morning show had ended) was normally good for things like Space 1999 or The Champions and stuff like Movies, Games and Videos but that's about it. Was there anything other than sport in the early '70s?

I always remember Space 1999 and Tarzan the TV show being in this slot around midday on Saturday just before Grandstand or World of Sport, sorry but I can't remember which channel they were on, probably ITV.
I'm not quite sure but Little house on the Prairie and Bonanza might fall into this slot as well.

I think New Faces used to come on straight after WoS, around 5pm, but that was probably just in Granada, I think it was peak time in other regions. New Faces was usually rubbish, and I wasn't sad to see it axed and replaced by US imports like Mork and Mindy. Why someone in the 2000s thought 'hey, let's bring back talent shows' is beyond me.

Anyone remember 'Masterspy' on early Sat evenings in probs 1978? It was William Franklyn and Jenny Lee Wright hosting a series of games and challenges with an espionage feel. In one challenge, a contestant had to answer questions asked of him on the telephone, while Franklyn had to try and distract him with entirely different questions. And so Franklyn would ask "Who is the leader of the Soviet Union?" and the contestant, answering the phone question, would reply "Mickey Mouse." Blatantly ripped off from the Two Ronnies!

When I was very young I remember wrestling would be on with Big Daddy and Giant Haystacks..(was that part of 'World of Sport'? I hated that, remember the monotone voice reading out football results for hours?) The Pink Panther show used to be on on a Saturday evening too I think? I loved it, I bought the boxset a couple of years ago.

I'd forgotten all about the results being read out and me being told to shut up so dad could concentrate on marking the pools. I always thought they were saying mill instead of nil.

A week or so ago, I was watching the scores round-up on 'Football Focus' with a couple of others, when I noticed the score Forfar Athletic had got, and took great delight in pointing out "Forfar 4!"
