  • Can you identify these 70s + 80s kids programmes?

Can anyone help identify these four memories?

    1) It was a children's TV series (although it may have been a one-off story) about a big house. There's a little girl who hides in a small cupboard. The cupboard is next to a bay window, and the window overlooks a maze in the grounds of the house. The girl is locked in the cupboard and can't get out - she starts crying, but her tears appear on the outside of the door, and we realise that she's a ghost. I think it was an adaptation of a book, possibly by someone called E. White or somesuch.

    2) In the other one, a young hero in a toga has to go to the bottom of the sea and walk along a pathway made of three different colours of hemispherical stones. If he treads on any of the red ones, he'll die. The pathway leads to a stone house underwater. In the house there's a giant crab on a plinth. The hero smashes the crab with his club.

    3) The third one is a puppet film, probably from Australia or New Zealand. There's a spherical robot (much like the one from Star Fleet) that travels to Earth and enters a department store. He thinks the speherical security camera is another robot and tries to speak to it. At the same time, there are other characters on a spaceship, still in deep space. They come to a set of traffic lights in space (on a meteor) and have to stop.

    4) This one had Tom Baker in it. He's strapped to a large a metal web and is being electrocuted by a villain. But - I know what you're thinking - it's NOT Doctor Who. This was broadcast when Sylvester McCoy was playing the Doctor, and I was such a Who fan as a kid I would've known if they were broadcasting repeats. It was much nastier in tone than Doctor Who as well.

    Thanks for your help!

Sylvester McCoy was the Doctor between 1987 - 1989 so this makes it possible to look at Tom Baker's mid-1980s filmography at IMDb and make an educated guess. Maybe you were watching a repeat of an episode of Remington Steele, could it be that? He was in a season 2 episode "Hounded Steele" made in 1984. I never watched it so I don't know.

Good idea. I've had a look, and I can't see anything that sounds like it. It definitely wasn't Remington Steele - it had a Hammer Horror feel to it. Very British, very 70s. I'm wondering if maybe it was a clip of an earlier Doctor Who-shown as part of another programme? He didn't have his Doctor Who costume on, though...

          Thanks for your help though!

Tom's Doctor is electrocuted in one of the Genesis of the Daleks cliffhangers - he has a Thal radiation suit on and a guard has activated the security system for their chuffing big rocket.

Number 3 turned out to be Stainless Steel and the Star Spies. I bought it on DVD - it's nowhere near as it good as it seemed at the time! https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uX2YtKZyWsI

Still no luck with the toga wearing youth and the crab or Tom Baker being electrocuted (I've seen Genesis of the Daleks a couple of times and I don't think it's that).
