Is there a way to stop spammers signing up? can the usernames chosen have a kind of filter for certain words?
Everyday we see the usual rubbish spamming (I'm sure its by the same person).and everyday I see the latest new member is...yweigwjn or some rubbish or a really obvious one (the last two days I've seen "bestsellerofviagra" and "mortgagerefi" have signed up, don't thing they will have a question about The Magic Roundabout or summat to ask.
No doubt they will get their one spam post in before they get banned

Hiya, the team are currently in the process of upgrading which will hopefully result in the spam being cut out, as it's gone a bit mad lately, please bear with us it'll be sorted soon.

Is there anyway of making one or two genuine folks here spam-busters? Enable them to delete unsuitable postings without giving them full op status? May help to ease the moderators load a bit!

Good Idea, but the people who have spammed should get instantly banned.I've seen a few who are still on here. The posts have been removed, but they just post them again

No point banning anyone all the time there is an open policy on joining, you just re-join with a different name. The only forums I have ever belonged to that stay relatively spam free are the ones with application only membership

Spiral and I are deleting the posts and as i said previously the spam will slow down/stop once the site is upgraded, the older members will remember the spam free days and we hope to be back like that soon!

What bugs me most about them is they are so predictable..practically every time I see a "new" member..they sign up,wait a day, then at around 12 midnight/1 a.m,they come back and post their ****..what do they gain from it?? no-one with any sense would click on the links they post

They're rarely real people... and there's many reasons why these bots automatically post all this rubbish, not all of them to do with getting forum members to click on the links. Too complicated to go into here though...

Soon as I see one I'm removing it from the system and banning them from the forum... stick with us, we'll keep on top of it!

                              Re: Spammers

With the new server and software upgrade we have implemented tough new anti-spam tools that should help to cut down the amount of drive-by viagra postings and the like. We'll never get rid of it all together but our hard-working team of moderators are doing a great job deleting any spam that gets through.

Don't forget, you can help by reporting spam to the moderators by clicking on the exclamation triangle in the top right of each post.
