Charging home from school just in the nick of time to see Bryan Robson score after 27 secs v France in Bilbao (was it?) in the WC.

All the music from this year sounds good now, even the stuff I hated at the time (such as Soft Rock) .... as I was a Madness fan back then

It was the first year I really started to take an interest in music.

I didn't get enough pocket money to buy singles so my Dad used to try & tape songs for me off the radio. I had the same tape for years with a really mish-mash of songs, but took it to a school end of term party & never got it back.

Nice one Richard ..... a similar thing happened in our house, but a couple of years earlier i.e. 1980.

Sunday evenings were bath nights, so there I was in the bath (aged 11) leaning over the side to press the cassette tape record button, with the wireless stood close by ...... the crackles from the VHF meant the recording was abysmal and it was a miracle that I wasn't electrocuted!!!

The first number one of the year was Land Of Make Believe by Bucks Fizz and the last was Save Your Love by Renee and Renato.
My fave number one of the year was House Of Fun by Madness.

"I counted them all out and I counted them all back in again." I used to have a book with that title by Brian Hanrahan (RIP). My Mum bought it for me.

Also I remember coming into school and somebody had chalked "Britain 1 Argentina 0" on the blackboard. That must have been after the sinking of the General Belgrano I suppose.

This was also the year that the ZX Spectrum was released.

Actually in the south west, TSW began broadcasting on 12 August 1981 as Westward ceased broadcasting the day before. However they broadcast under the Westward name until Westward's franchise was officially due to end on New Year's Eve 1981. TSW began using the TSW name as of opening time 1 Jan 1982.

They began at 4:45pm with Countdown on Tuesday 2 November 1982 to all ITV regions of the UK except Wales. Wales had its own version S4C which launched the day before.
