Default Yellow Stickers on dated food

I cant remember seeing those yellow reduction stickers on food going back in time, not like today.I think there was less food wasted hence smaller shops.Today there are reduction sections in big stores

Start of the morning they dont knock off much of the price, but if stuff is left until the evening you can pick up bargains,if your in store at the right time.

I'm not sure when best before dates and use by dates came about but I'm pretty sure they weren't around when I was young. I suppose you're probably right that smaller shops didn't have a surplus of stock so it wasn't an issue. Whatever was in date was sold and replaced.

I've got the feeling best before dates were around by about 1980.

I've noticed some pound stores have stock that only has a month or 2 left, so I guess some overstock from the wholesalers goes to them rather than be binned.
