Re: The Guardians by John Christopher
I was a big JC fan as a teenager. I read a lot of his books. I think I read The Guardians, but I remember almost nothing about it. Not his best work. Is this the one where there is a big fence separating North and South, the protagonist manages to dig a hole and go under it?

Re: The Guardians by John Christopher
Yes, we were given it to read at school as well, as an introduction to O Level English Literature, before progressing to Dickens, Shaw and Shakespeare.

I remember reading this novel in English class in 1974. Does anyone else remember it?
------------------------------------------------
The Guardians is a young adult science fiction novel written by John Christopher, originally published in 1970.
Set in the year 2052, the novel depicts a future, authoritarian England divided into two distinct societies: the modern, overpopulated "Conurbs" and the aristocratic, rarefied "County"; the former consists of crowded city districts and all-pervasive technology while the latter is made up of manors and rolling countrysides typical of 19th-century England. The novel follows a young Conurban named Rob as he comes to experience life in both worlds, uncovering truths and choosing sides in the process.
