  • Does anyone remember 'Monsterbacks', a series of horror books?

Published by Marshall Cavendish, 1980. Author Dorothy Darrell Ward, Illustrator was Bernard Brett. Four in the series, titles were 'Ghosts, Ghouls and Spirits, 'Monster Or Man',
'Werewolves and Other Weird Creatures' and 'Vampire'. I recall I received them on my fifth birthday. Excellent books with games, puzzles, history of title and related films/books/art. Illustrations were great, photographs too. I lost them over the years but have replaced two thus far. Anyone recall?

Yes I certainly remember Monsterbacks, I still have mine which I bought in the early 1980's. These are still some of my favorite books, just love everything about them. Where did you buy yours from? I got mine from a shop called 'The Book Cellar' which is now 'The Works'. I have a spare copy of Werewolves and other weird creatures, which 2 do you still need?

I had four of them (I think that was the whole set) but like most of my childhood things they have gone

I used to have loads of stuff related to horror and the supernatural when I was a kid!

Grouse!! They are super books, aren't they? My copies came from the bookshop on high street Minster. I am missing Werewolves and Vampire. Real hard to come by. Thank you for your post, I reckon I've seen you on another forum, maybe horror genre. I'm a huge fan of horror, particularly the Hammer era and 20's/30's, amazing pictures they made almost romantic with a moral theme, not all cut 'em up blood and guts. Good to meet you!!

Hi, I realize that this is a topic from 15 years ago, but on the off-chance you guys are still active, I registered just for this! I am interested in finding copies of the Werewolves and Monster or Man Monsterbacks. If anyone here knows where I might find a copy of either that is not astronomical, please let me know. I have looked on Bookfinder, Amazon, Abebooks and Better World books. I have the Vampires and Ghosts ones that I've kept since my childhood, but I'd love to see the Werewolves one in particular. Even if someone posted a YouTube video paging through the books, I'd watch that too. My nostalgia is very strong for these books. I've loved horror ever since discovering this series.

The best bet would be to keep watching eBay, although it can be a long wait I've filled a couple of long-time slim-chance wants from it. One thing I would search for about once a week for ten years but finally got what I was looking for. Never did find a videotape of an old kids show I knew to have existed... had to wade through lots of Sooty but never got the Barnaby/Jeremy/Colargol I still pine for.

I love old monster stuff, it usually makes me happy just to see it.

Hi Becca! Thanks for your reply. Yeah, I've kept my eyes open since I was a kid. My aunt had the Werewolves and Monster ones and my brother and I found Vampires and Ghosts. We had a garage sale so we could buy them! Our mom told us not to buy the same books as we could read our aunt's copies whenever we visited her. But she was a teacher and put those books in her classroom library. By the time a school year was over, both books had grown legs and walked outta the classroom lol Wish we'd ignored our mom and bought the ones we knew best! lol I did see a couple of copies about a decade ago, but they were hundreds of dollars each, so I could not afford that.
But now you have me curious; what did you have success with finding on eBay? And I've never heard of Sooty or Barnaby/Jeremy/Colargol. What are those characters from? I'm in Canada, not the UK, but you might still jog my memory!
