    I personally am wary of putting modern concepts onto the past. Even if George did want to be an actual boy, the 1940s were before puberty blocker drugs etc. so she was going to um - makes chest and bottom motions with my hands - whether she wanted to or not.

        I'm sure George was just a Tom boy like a lot of girls were. I know I was for a short while.

          being a tom boy means a lot less today in the western world where dresses and skirts have become much less ubiquitous and girls are not pressured as much to have long hair.
