  • Milk Mate

Does anyone remember Milk Mate? It was around in the mid 1980s (a TVS ad break on YT had an advert for it in a pre-News at 5:45 slot). MacDougall's of the self-raising flour people made them.

It was syrupy and came in a bottle, a bit like what the ice cream man put on ice creams. Presumably it was used with milk to make strawberry milkshakes (I assume that other flavours were available), but we used it as a topping to put on vanilla ice cream.

Didn't last very long on supermarket shelves - was forgotten about soon afterwards.

It does remind me of the strawberry sauce bottle that ice cream vans had on the shelf when being served.

There is a rose syrup used to flavour milk. It's most popular with people from the Indian Subcontinent. I think it's a bit of an acquired taste.
