  • Drifter bars

I was listening to a song by the Drifters on the radio, funnily enough (the American group, not Sir Cliff Richard's backing group which had to change their name to The Shadows in order to avoid both confusion and copyright action), and it reminded me of the chocolate bar Drifter which was made by Rowntree's (which apart from the Fruit Pastilles have since been absorbed by Nestle). I am certain that they were still sold in shops in the 1990s and also advertised on television up to that point.

They reminded me slightly of Twix because weren't they two bars in one, if you know what I mean? But I know that they were made by Rowntree's and not Mars. One of their early to mid 1990s adverts was set in a launderette (?) had someone talk in some language with supposed English subtitles on screen. When I attended Saturday morning Judo at a local centre circa 1990 (I was being bullied at school at the time and so I thought that it would help gain confidence in defending myself), the snack bar in the centre sold them and I used to get one before I left so that I could eat it on the way home, and put the wrapper in one of the litterbins on the street when I had finished it.

Do they still make them? - I have not seen them in years. If they are still around, I have assumed that they are not due to the lack of adverts on the TV for them in the last few years.

I wonder when they stopped making them? - did they make it to the year 2000, I wonder?

        From Wikipedia

In 2007, Nestlé discontinued Drifter before reintroducing it in May 2008, enjoying a similar act of nostalgia as Cadbury's Wispa bar. In October 2018, Drifter, which at the time was being produced at the Nestlé Fawdon factory in Newcastle Upon Tyne, UK, was discontinued by Nestlé due to low consumer demand

It was probably discontinued due to: A) the lack of a prominent TV advertising campaign; and: B) the fact that it wasn't Mars, KitKat or Dairy Milk - i.e. not a flagship brand made by that company.

I wonder whether they were named after the 1950s and 1960s pop and soul group? (No pun intended with the word Soul...)
