  • Unknown irish food

I've been reading this book by him who wrote the Commitments -Roddy Doyle - bok about an Irish family in 1990's

In a couple of places in the story this Irishman's going out to work, he finds out his wife has put 'Easy Slices ' in his sandwiches so he throws them to local dogs

    What are Easy-Slices?

    Re: Unknown irish food

I must say I like a challenge, but after speaking to a friend of mine who I thought may be able to help and spending some time Googling, I've come up with a big fat zero. I did find a critique of 'Irish women and national identity' and it mentions one of the lines from the book you talk about:

    https://www.msu.edu/~heinenel/eng310d/essay.html
(scroll to just over half way down)

Though the person writing the piece fails to identify what an 'easy slice' actually is, I think you could infer that if corned beef was an inexpensive way of buying meet at that time, then maybe 'easy slices' were even more so. Perhaps the cheapest, toughest, least flavorsome cut.

      Danny,
      I can answer this.
An "Easy Slice" is a giraffe gonad.
Hope this puts your mind at ease.

        Totally mad answer - lol!

I was wondering if something like a Kraft cheese slice or the basic packets of so-called ham you get in Aldi

Em, yeeaah. Thought I was gonna get told off for that stupid remark!

No idea what it really is.
Most likely, slang for some cheap cut or meat substitute.

I thought by now somebody would have got an answer - is there no member from 'the land of the bogs and the little people' who can advise?

(Reggie Perrin quote slipped into the post there in case nobody noticed!)

Maybe this ? although it appears to be more of a Jock n Geordie foodstuff

                    It does look tempting yep.

Tell ya what Ross - the further south you go in the UK the harder it becomes to track down decent black pudding like is shown on that plate - I lived in Cambridge for a year or so and most shops they looked at you like you were some kind of barbarian just for asking if they sold it

                    'Wassat Mate? '
Made out of blaaaad innit Mate?'
' Naow Mate , we aint gort thaaat '

                        Processed cheese?

Oh. I never thought of that.

I was coming back on to post this picture to see if anyone agreed they could be EASY SLICES but it looks like it doesn't matter now cos I've been beaten by some cheese

Are you sure you were talking to proper butchers and not supermarket kids? I can get award-winning haggis here, and I've had some top-draw black pudding too.
