Oooo we used to get a van coming round in the 70's called 'Natorani's'. The best ice cream I've ever tasted. The lady was an Italian lady with very very long hair. I can just hear her voice now. Happy Days

Never went to an ice cream van with a bowl though

We had an Italian lady too. The family was called Gabrielle. The lady who came on an evening was called Margarita. She had short black hair and spoke in Italian/English. Her ice cream was lovely!

We used to go out and get icecream from Rossi in a bowl. His icecream was the best. Amazingly he still does the rounds today, although he comes close to where I live, he doesn't stop on a street close enough. Sadly we do get icecream people coming round, but it isn't the amazing whipping stuff Rossi dishes out. If you took an egg cup or some other small cup he would give you some hundreds and thousands too, or maybe even some nuts. Juice was put on the icecream itself in the bowl. Sweet sweet juice.

When I was a kid my mates uncle used to be a ice cream man called 'Jack Frost'. It was a bit of a pain because if you went without my friend you'd get the bog standard ice cream. If you went with him you used to get lollies and hundreds of thousands and sometimes even sherbet. This guy used to poll up at my high school in the play ground on a dinner times, always parking so that people couldn't get to the drivers door, mainly because there were a lot of wrong 'uns that used to attend. He used to bring a pretty girl that used to serve icecream among other things such as sweets and that. The raging testosterone in that masquerade of what was meant to be a queue must have been sky high looking back at it. 'Jack' was one of those happy but foul mouthed guys that every teen boy found amazingly funny, so it must have been good for trade him pitching up.

I don't think he works as an icecream vendor any more, although he did used to drive one of the local buses into the closest city where I live. I asked him about it and he denied it all, but I don't know who he was trying to kid, he was always round at my mates when we were young and there was no denying it wasn't him. When people like that are made they break the mould after. I guess he just didn't want the hassle.

There was a Rossi family who made ice cream near where I'm from. They were based in bishop auckland and had a cafe there. They did the rounds in an ice cream van too. I remember them stopping outside my house in Kirk Merrington.

Bowls to the ice cream van is new to me. Probably a bit before my time. We had a regular ice cream man for a while who looked just like the late MP Robin Cook, but his ice cream offerings were pretty poor and he had nicotiney fingers (yuk!) , although he did have green squirty juice as well as red which was quite a novelty at the time. The 'better' ice cream vans hardly ever came round our way. The ones that sold lovely oysters with the marshmallow shell wafer mmm!
