  • Most extreme lengths to get memorabilia

In this thread can members tell us what lengths they have went to to get a certain piece/pieces of memorabilia?
Be it toys, games, clothes from old shows or old games consoles. How much did you pay for them?
You could have walked 30 miles to a carboot to get it? or taken a plane ride?
Or even get a piece of memorabilia in a place you did not expect maybe it was somehere you were working?

I remember a few yrs back i got a lord of the rings computer game for the spectrum when i was doing a bit of work for someone.
It has two cassettes a game i'd wanted for a long time and to say i was happy was an understatement, you see i collect both lord of the rings and computer consoles.
    so its in both collections.

It was in an old shed and he said take what you like.

Thing is i've done work for people who are huge into going to carboots so i sometimes get lucky.

I drove with 3 of my friends in my 1 litre polo with a dicky head gasket and half an exhaust from South Shields all they way to Bishop Auckland (BARAC Rally) and back to go to a car boot sale. On the way home an HT lead dis-integrated and the oil pressure sensor split open, dousing the offside brake and tyre in oil. It was worth is though, as I got a box of 8 inch floppy disks and a Decca Gypsy Super12, and a tiny tiny tiny computer. Would do it again tomorrow!

It's like an adventure, Getting up at the crack of dawn with your mates to go to somewhere you've never been before and hopefully leaving with treasure! It's almost like a rush! I'll have to get some photos up here once I figure out how to re-size them!

I absolutely adore them, some of the best times of my life have been in my mates Escort or Focus, blasting down the motorway to exotic locations (Like Inverness, York, Shropshire and Scarborough) on the hunt for interesting and retro. He had his heart set on a 1950s all valve telly in a shop right in York town centre (can't really miss it, it stacked to the rafters with stuff!) only to be told that it was for display only. You could almost see the tears seeping out! Loves his valve gear, our Mark does. (I'll have to tell him about here, great forum with great people too! )

the furthest ive went is 15 miles to a carboot.
i cycled started about 7 in the morning in the driving rain but thats part of the fun braving the elements.
its a big carboot and i picked up some cheap music cassettes from the eighties.
they where 10p 20p per cassette and in good nick

Now that's determination if ever i've seen it! Hopefully the tapes were good when you got home and were't taped over with Karaoke as happened with me once! Has anyone here ever been to Seaham car boot sale in the summer?

Oh Crikey! We are talking 1978 here - My mate and Me used to be into reel to reel Tape Recorders (Grundig TK5, PAM Tellies, Stellaphone Cossorr Radios!) And he would strap this stuff to the back of the bike rack on his RSW 16 shopper bike and go across town with it wobbling away with bungee cords and avoiding the bumps to avoid busting the valves!

Re: Most extreme lengths to get memorabilia

Ive only ever used a reel to reel once, and that was to play a reel of 1/8th inch tape i found in the burnt out remains of a shed in the middle of nowhere (Local ledgend states that a mad old doctor lived there and he used to tempt people back to his shed for a cup of tea laced with drugs before he'd steal their organs... It was a creepy enough place as it was!). I was too scared to play it incase it was cursed and chickened out! :P

I've just been greeted by the mental image of one of my friends pushing his Raleigh Chopper with 3 valve radios tied to it with some washing line, whilst I carried a 4th radio, a record player and about a dozen LPs! This must have been 2005ish, if we ever got a friday off from school, straight to the flea market where we'd have a good look around, a cup of strong tea and a bacon and egg butty! Used to go so often we were on first name terms with the vendors, who would usually stick an old computer to one side for me, and vintage stereo equipment for my mate! Great times

It's the only way you'll ever get stuff at the end of the day. Can't wait for the weather to get better and all the big boot sales to open up again.
