  • Nuclear-free zone signs

These were placed on town/county borders next to the usual sign with the 'Welcome to wherever'. They had the 'nuclear' yellow and black fan sign on them. Not sure if these were country-wide but Tyne and Wear definitely had them. I've not seen one in donkey's years, probably the 80's.

I remember Manchester had a few around until a few years ago.

I never really knew why it was such a big deal to shout about it but I suppose it was a hot (excuse the pun) topic back then what with Cold War threats and Chernobyl. Also there was a big to do about them building a big nuclear power plant in the neighbouring county of Northumberland in those days, although this never got built in the end.

I remember the Manchester signs started appearing not long after the Chernobyl disaster.

I remember at one point the ever-crazy London Borough of Camden had these signs about every third or fourth lamp-post along some roads. Must have cost a fortune.

I don't remember the signs appearing in our local area but there was a few scatterd around Bristol. They were attached to lamp posts with cable ties here and there. The black and yellow nuclear sign was popular amongst our local college population. It was a bit like the old cold war CND sign from the 60's and 70's.There were a few young ones wearing the same design on badges attached to their school bags sometime in the 90's.
