There used to be one who had a habit of shaking people's hands and asking for change for a cuppa. Most people ignored him but he didn't seem to mind.

There used to be an old guy who would hang about the small reading room of my local library in the early 80s. Not to mince words, he whiffed quite a bit, and none of the staff would go in there unless they absolutely had to. Needless to say, he had the room to himself once he was in there. Sometimes I would see him knocking around town, but mainly in the library. No-one seemed to know who he was, and after a while he wasn't seen around anymore--maybe passed on to another town.

I remember seeing this man who looked like a scruffy version of Patrick Troughton around many years ago.

I wasn't sure if he was a tramp or not, once I saw him being escorted out of a pub.

There used to be a guy we called "Peter the Tramp" who lived near my parents, he was very scruffy and used to trim the nettles in the footpath at the end of the road in summer. He had an old butcher's bike and used to ride it with a dog on the front, it wasn't his dog he'd always argue for some reason. Was apparently a nice chap, i think he lived in an old shack in the woods nearby but never really knew. he died some years back which highlights how slack the council are with clearing walkways.

There is one near where I used to live here in Australia, his name is Ziggy and he lives in a field by a road, although he gets moved on, he had an igloo made from filled carrier bags. We were stuck in traffic one day next to where he was sitting on the pavement, apparently his nuts were sticking out of a hole in his pants according to my Mrs.........

There were a few of them in Nottingham, but they soon disappear, hopefully as a result of having their lives turned around. I used to see this familiar one who looked as if he had all his worldly possessions with him staggering up Mansfield Road.

I suppose that beggars and drunks are not quite the same thing - in the 1990s, I used to see some drunks getting on the wrong bus. They weren't causing trouble as such, but they just had a bit too much time in the pub, that's all.

Ironically, tramps are a lot less harmful then a lot of youngsters who would prefer to mug you and beat you up, so much as looking at you.

Seems to do quite well rummaging in the bins and rumour has it that he sleeps behind a supermarket where he gets out of date food. He's actually quite fat! I'm pretty sure it's a life choice for him after so many years.

Actually, it's not only the tramps who have their pick of skip food; there are 'freegans' too, who make meals back at home out of the food they 'liberate' from skips

I had a quick look on the Internet and apparently he went into a hostel last year...well, so his Facebook dedication page says! Elsewhere there are rumours that he'd died but I hope that's not true!

Someone on another forum mentioned that tramps might have been more inclined to walk between towns and cities in the past in order to get to different doss houses which they were only allowed to stay in for 3 days max.

Sadly he did die in 2012, so didn't go into a hostel after all 🙁. I miss seeing him around the city.
