At the flats i live there are separate bins for card & paper, tins & bottles, food, & general waste.

I guess less people need to throw away hot ashes, & normally black bins are for general waste.

When was the last time you saw a large round galvanised Paladin bin in use? The binmen in my area haven't had vehicles that can tip them up for over 20 years.

Those bin workers were 'proper' men. They use to carry the metallic bins over their backs. Some even carried two at a time.
Those bins use to remind me of the FA cup trophy.

            Re: Rubbish Collection

I used to work for the council, part of my kit was an old black donkey jacket with shoulder patches. They seemed to be general working attire years ago. One of the toughest jackets I ever had and one of the most comfortable once broken in. Mine wore out and eventually ended up being thrown out. Too many moth holes in it near the end.

Getting back to rubbish, ever noticed if the bin men did not like somebody they would always tip a little of the rubbish out on their path on the way to the perfume wagon. We had a neighbour that always went hammer and tongs at the bin men, so they just spilt a little more each week as a running game between themselves.

It may have been a little macho at the time, but some men later paid for it. Back and knee/leg problems. There were also a couple of injuries over the years, pulled muscles being one.

I don't know whether having a communal bin is better for getting rid of rubbish rather than having just one bin for one's own address - the fact that one's own rubbish is sharing space with one's neighbour's throw-outs makes you think in many ways.

Why do I think of that Lonnie Donegan song when I look at this thread?

Where I live there is a bin room shared by all the flats.

When you mention a room, I assumed that it was indoors - it must get really smelly keeping rubbish in there if that is the case.

It's not the most pleasant place when the bins need to be emptied, but the room gets cleaned out every now & again.

Surely something like that should be outdoors? Health and Safety would have a field day if they knew about that.

It's quite common for flats to have a bin room, at least we don't have a rubbish chute that easily clogs up.

I think that it stinks (literally).
