  • Favourite smells as a child

Apologies if a thread has already been started on this...

I remember even to this day certain smells from my childhood, some were good some not so good.

Creosote! I LOVED this smell!!! As kids we loved it when somebody painted their fence! We would spend hours just sniffing it lol

    Tarmac
    Freshly cut grass
Christmas decorations (they had a certain musty smell)
    Airfix glue
    Car exhaust fumes
Kays catalogue (sniffing the pages of a new catalogue)

My Dad used to take my & brother to places like preserved railways, that always had a smell of machine oil & burning coal.

Fairs always seemed to smell of hot sugar & frying onions.

My Gran's caravan used to smell of wood & the fluid for the chemical toilet, which was strangely pleasant.

I still love the smell of dust on the valves of an old record player warming up. So evocative!

Smell of a real coal fire (even when it's not lit) in a house. You get a faint sooty smell.

Or the smell of a pipe smoker. My dad used to smoke one till some point in the 80s. Always smelled comforting somehow.
Occasionally walking around places you'll suddenly get a whiff, and spot a rare pipe smoker some place. Takes me right back as soon as I smell it.

New furniture & carpets have an odd slightly chemical smell, but somehow it makes your home feel refreshed.

The smell of beer when passing the pubs and clubs when I was quite young.
The smell of a car interior during the 1970s. Don't ask me why.....
Who cared about rules when you were young?
