Ian Wallace: Those Musical Years: 1909 and 1956
    Tue 6th Feb 1979, 21:02 on BBC Radio 2
with Marilyn Hill Smith, Lindsay Benson, Robert Docker, and the London Theatre Orchestra, conducted by Alexander Faris.

In both years the Chancellor of the Exchequer was to become a future Prime Minister, Lloyd George in 1909 and Harold Macmillan in 1956, during which year premium bonds were introduced, England retained the Ashes, the GPO introduced weather forecasts by telephone, Grace Kelly married Prince Rainier of Monaco, and Peter Twiss notched up a new air speed record of 1,132 mph in a Fairey Delta Two. Back in 1909 Bleriot flew the Channel and John Galsworthy's "Strife" was presented on the stage. The popular songs of the day included "Has Anybody Here Seen Kelly?" and "Shine on Harvest Moon". The theatre of 1956 witnessed John Osborne's "Look Back in Anger", and "Under Milk Wood" was presented at the Edinburgh Festival. The deaths were announced of Mistinguett, Sir Alexander Korda and Robert Newton. The popular music of the time included the "Dam Busters' March" and "Rock Around the Clock".

Fri 9th Feb 1979, 18:31 on BBC Radio 1 England
Star artists and guest DJS join Kid Jensen to review the week's new records.
Over the past few months Roundtable has featured a wide variety of pop personalities, from Ian Dury to Kate Bush, along with record producers, journalists and disc jockeys. They've all helped to give the show its uniquely unpredictable and colourful character, and the often controversial discussion of the week's significant new releases makes Roundtable a highlight of any broadcasting week.

The story of Radio Comedy in 11 parts

Bernard Cribbins treads where 'Ignorance is Bliss' to find 'Danger, Men at Work' on the highly esteemed Goon Show. What is the Popeye connection? Is Ernie Bogwash Bluebottle s father? Where do Duckweed and Eggblow come in and Grytpype-Thynne and Count Jim (Thighs) Moriarty go out? And is Crystal Jollibottom behind Major Bloodnok's explosive end?
