Musicians, music journalists and fellow DJs have all proclaimed John Peel as a major musical influence.
Somewhat modestly, the man in question doesn't really think of himself in such a role and claims, 'I don't sit back over a glass of port and think. Music... I just seem to be doing something that no one else seems to do'.
Although that fact strikes him as rather odd. it's no quirk of fate that over the years hundreds of aspiring bands have sent their work to him - on one particular day he received 53 tapes - seeing Peel as their gateway to wider recognition.

Peel's preference for playing new music has led him to be accused of being deliberately 'obscure' - a mould he rejects. 'The idea of me being stuck out doing rare and exotic things is not one that appeals.' And although an increasing number of records on the programme have achieved commercial success by entering the charts. Peel still moves ahead.
I'm more interested in seeing what comes in the mail, or go to a pub and see a band I've never seen before I would see bands like Adam and the Ants, if they were on at my village hall and what they were doing was interesting - but there is a difference between being interesting and being stagnant.

The first day of the British Open Golf Championship and Terry Wogan strides manfully down the fairway: his portable record player under his arm.
