Washing powder wrapped in newspaper

Following on from the half day closing thread...we used to go a small shop on a Sunday morning which used to be open for a few hours in the morning...i often got sent for washing powder and the owner used to wrap it up in newspaper....i was told it was against the law to sell such stuff on a Sunday, amongst other items so he wrapped it up to avoid being seen...did anyone else experience this...and does anyone know why?

Did the cheeky swine charge for the newspaper?

Could have been against the law at some point, although I think it may have been a location thing - holiday resorts were more likely to be able to see a need for Sunday opening, as opposed to more locally oriented places, where the attitude was more likely to be 'you live here, you know when we're open'.

I remember hearing that one furniture shop used to open as a greengrocers on a Sunday, & would give away items of furniture with each sale of fruit & veg, sold at a very high price.
