It would have been very different if we were jetting off on holiday. It might even have been different if we were going into the airport for a bit and there was an outside chance of feasting on a Wimpy, but no. The only reason we ever went to the airport was to park up on the road near the end of the runway so we could watch planes going in and out. For hours.

Found myself driving along that very road recently on the way to pick someone up from the airport and had an overwhelming urge to pull over for a while . Unfortunately in these days of high security there is a 10 foot, solid fence there so you can't see anything any more. Back then it was a tiny flimsy fence. Anybody could have jumped over it and sauntered onto the runway.

Like others hear i hated going to my grandparents (dads parents) we had to sit in total silence for the whole visit which was around two hours every Saturday without fail there was nothing to do no books or toys not even allowed to have the telly on needless to say i never developed a close bond with them and stopped going at the first opportunity.

My parents always seem to take us round to people's houses a lot when we (me & my brother & sister) were young.

This was almost always on a Sunday so we all had to have our hair washed (alway getting shampoo in my eyes) & put into our best (read super itchy) clothes.

My parents would ways watch us like hawks to make sure we behaved, which made things even more uncomforable.

For some reason we always had to go for a walk during the day, the worse the weather the longer the walk.

It could be even worse if people came round to our house, almost all the above applied, along with having to chaperone some children you hardly knew, & make sure they didn't damage any toys of yours without being told off for "not sharing".

At least by the time I started to get piles of homework to do at the weekend things seem to have eased off & we didn't do so much socialising.

The cemetery for me too. Every Sunday afternoon. It seemed a very long walk and was always followed by a visit to Nanny's where we always had salmon sandwiches and tinned fruit cocktail which you always had to have a slice of bread and butter with. That was ok-ish but there were no toys to speak off and it was always very crowded as everything happened in the kitchen/sitting room even though there was a vast front room which was "for best". I never did find out when "best" happened.

Tinned fruit cocktail is bad enough but with a slice of bread and butter??? I'd rather contract Ebola that endure that suffrage.

Barbers to get a hair cut.Dentist.....I bit his finger on one occation.Doctors as I never knew what to say,and I still find it hard to talk to them.Church,I kicked up such a fuss that I never got took again.Still not too keen on them after all these years.Never liked any small place with lots of people especially if the doors shut.School,because I got so much trouble there,so it was easier not to go and bunk off when I could.I have also to agree with cemetarys.Not somewhere I go willingly even now.

I loved going to my nans,She cooked wonderful food,and was never too strict.Used to go everywhere I could with my grandparants.However some of my uncles and aunties were another matter and made you feel uncomfortable and figgity.Always tried to get out of visiting them.

I always quite liked going to the cemetery. I went quite often with mam to visit her parent's grave. She gave me the job of throwing out the old flowers and water and filling the vase with water from the little outside tap there. Although I think I was old enough to understand the concept of death by then, I wasn't affected by it. I didn't know those grandparents as they died when I was very young, but I remember finding is strange when mam used to shed a few tears when we were there. I couldn't understand why she was sad.

"Oh no, not Dickens!"
Dickens was the B&Q of its day where I lived. SO BORING. Nothing to do except press all the door bells, walk through all the display doors that were set up as cubes of four so you could walk through them and hide inside, and steal the yellow and red glass blocks off the front of those early 80's fires

I used to love going to the airport. Me and a mate used to go plane spotting to Manchester when i was about 10. Up early on Saturday morning. Packed lunch, flask of coffee, bus to the city centre then another to the airport. Seemed to take ages but we'd stay all day. Even had binoculars and an FM radio to listen to the tower.

We often joke about having a day out at B & Q with our daughter on bank holidays. Whenever i've had to visit on a bank holiday the place is like a creche.

The one place I used to hate going was shopping on the local precinct. The precinct itself wasn't too bad. There was a Zodiac, John Menzies, Woolworths and Boots with a decent record department to keep me busy. Next to the precinct though was the market and being dragged around that used to do my head in. Don't miss it one bit.

I was always fairly interested in everything, the only thing I couldn't stand was having to wait with my Mum in the car for hours for my sister to either come out of school, or ballet, or guides, or parties, or something like that. We seldom got to park anywhere of interest, usually just residential roads in the dusk.

Oh No, Not Uncle Stan and Aunt Evelyn's Place!

"Uncle" Stan* and "Aunt" Evelyn* were old friends of my parents. Evelyn and my mom were housemates back when they were single so they were very close. The problem was that Stan & Evelyn had no kids -- in fact Evelyn's mother and sister (who never married) lived with them. Stan & Evelyn lived in a fairly upscale house full of Asian antiques of which you can appreciate was not very kid friendly. Besides those temple guardian statuettes spooked the hell out of me! I dreaded being dragged there where, as I posted in another thread, I was the odd man out. During these visits I would just have a book or toy that I brought along or watched TV in Stan's study. Very boring.

I hated being dragged to the local nursery where my mum bought her fruit and veg..........the lady that ran it was very nice but her husband I thought was very scarey and I remember he had extremely big hands

I was always fascinated by the airport: the planes, the interesting airport vehicles, etc. Nowadays you can't even see a plane unless you're actually taking a flight! Where I live there's John Wayne International Airport. There was an observation deck on the south end of the old terminal and then when they built the new terminal you could still get a good view of the tarmac from the top level of the carpark but then after 9-11 they built an 8-10 foot wall up there blocking the view!

mainly on sundays which made it worse as i cant stand sundays.

normally the houses where small and cramped and i had to sit quiet as a mouse.

Yeah, many many garden centres. Some were better than others. Some had decent little play areas with cool slides and swings. Others had animals. I always remember one that had big grape vines and a toucan. I also loved the earthy smell of old fashioned 'working' garden centres. Those that had proper old gardeners in wellies and tatty jumpers and where selling was only a sideline. There were always hoses and half open compost bags lying around to trip over.

My family lived not far away from a well known English seaside resort, and we used to go there during school holidays or sunny Bank Holidays. My grandfather had a cousin who lived by the sea. She was very old, lived in a bungalow that smelled like wee, and her entire house was packed top to bottom with china ornaments and lace doilies and other such fussy things. She had a very "old lady" name (let's pretend it was Edna) that became my sister's middle name when she was born, and my sister still cringes every time she has to give her full name on official forms. Every trip to the seaside included a visit to Edna and she would always criticise me and I'd have to sit there in a chair listening to it because the adults would yell at me if I tried to do anything else, you couldn't move in there without risking breaking Edna's precious ornaments. I think I was about eight when Edna died and as wicked as it is, I was just so relieved that I wouldn't have to sit through any more excruciating visits to her house

My grandparents owned a guest house for several years so bought everything from a big local Cash & Carry. We would often visit them at weekends which is when they'd usually go to the Cash & Carry, and end up dragging me and my sister around it so our mum could have a "break". Of course we hated it
