1970 .... and in January the Beatles finished what was to be theyre very last recording session as a group.

The Isle of Weight concert was a big event with the Who... the Doors... and Jimi Hendrix... sadly Jimi died 3 weeks later .

In June Ted Heath became Prime Minister... the Tories took over the reins of power and were determined to set the country on the straight and narrow after all that socialist, fabian nonsense with Harold and his pipe.

Over in Vietnam Nixon ordered the invasion of Cambodia extending that tragic war.

Oh Calcutta opened in London... perhaps a signal that the 1970s were going to be the decade of sleaze... whether Mary Whitehouse liked it or not !

The sleaze theme continued when the Sun started the topless page 3 daily feature.... Steph
Rohn became the first ever page 3 pin up girl

    New programmes on TV were
    The Goodies
    On the Buses
    Six wives of Henry 8th
    Look Mike Yarwood
    Queenies Castle
    Catweazle

Perhaps the biggest tragedy that year was a tidal wave in East Pakistan that took the lives of 150,000 people.

Hi Silverbirch.........great idea for a thread......
As for The Beatles, the last time all 4 members were at Abbey Road was August 20th 1969. It was basically a studio session to finalise the running order of the album (Abbey Road)......Two days later the Beatles were photographed together for the last time at Tittenhurst Park (John & Yoko's home)......
    Cheers

Also in the News was the plight of Apollo 13, where a tragedy was only just averted.

Sportswise, Chelsea beat Leeds in a FA Cup replay at Old Trafford. The few times in recent history that the FA Cup has been decided away from Wembley or Cardiff.

Brazil won the what is normally regarded as the best World Cup held in Mexico. It was the 3rd time Brazil had won the Jules Remet trophy, & were awarded it outright.

Jochen Rindt became so far the only posthumus Formula 1 champion.

Other TV included Sci-Fact drama Doomwatch & Doctor Who returned in colour with Jon Pertwee in the lead role.

1970 I would have been 7 that year so still in the infants. I guess I would have been playing with Ideal's Zeroids robots, Billy Blastoff (now then, just where did they go?) and the mighty Action Man, and reading a heady mix of TV21 and Pippin! I guess. The year before we'd moved to a new neighbourhood (in the same time) so I would have had new friends and the bit of land that has been an old people's home for years now was just a swampy wood in 1970. Boy, what I'd give for some pics of friends and places we'd play in back then.

Other sporting news from 1970 was Porsche's first win at the Le Mans 24 hours, driven by Richard Attwood & Hans Hermann.

A lot of footage shot during the race & just after was used in the film Le Mans, released the next year starring Steve McQueen.

Yes you are quite right Paul, George & Ringo were at Abbey Road studios on Jan 3rd to re-invigorate "I Me Mine" from the ill-fated Get Back sessions.
It may need emphasising that the Get Back (Let it Be) sessions PRECEDED their final album (Abbey Road) sessions although Let It Be (Album) was not released until May 8th 1970......
The final session where all 4 Beatles worked together was 20/08/69.......
Abbey Road itself is a monumental album as they really pulled together knowing it to be their last.......

                      Indeed!

(I think this may have been a publicity shot before they got the costume and hairstyle finalised.)

The first number one single of the year was Love Grows by Edison Lighthouse and the last was I Hear You Knocking by Dave Edmunds Rockpile.
The best single of the year though has to be Back Home by The England World Cup Squad '70'!

                          Re: 1970

1970 was before I was even born, but nonetheless here's a look back at that year.

The Eurovision Song Contest came from RAI Congrescentrum, Amsterdam, The Netherlands on Saturday 21 March
                          • 12 countries took part.
                          • There were no new or returning countries.
                          • As a way of expressng their dislike of the 1969 voting system and result, Finland, Norway, Sweden and Portugal withdrew from the 1970 Contest.
                          • Nonetheless, the voting system used in 1969 continued to be used 1970: each country had 10 jury members who each awarded 1 point to their favorite song.
                          • However a tie-break rule was introduced: in the event of a tie, each song tied for first place would be performed once more, after which the juries of countries not in the tie would vote their favorite song.
                          • Ireland won with "All Kinds Of Everything" sung by Dana, scoring 32 points (I know that sounds low, but that's how the voting system worked). This was their first ever win.
                          • "All Kinds Of Everything" subsequently became number one on the UK singles chart and stayed there for two weeks.
                          • The UK's entry "Knock, Knock (who's There?)" sung by Mary Hopkin, finished 2nd with 26 points.
                          • Luxembourg finished last with nul points: "Je Suis Tombé Du Ciel" sung by David-Alexandre Winter.

The 9th FIFA World Cup, was held from 31 May to 21 June 1970 in Mexico.
                          • Out of 75 countries which entered, only 16 countries qualified for the final tournament.
                          • England qualified automatically as 1966 champions and Mexico qualified automatically as hosts.
                          • Scotland failed to qualify.
                          • The first round consisted of four groups of four countries each (Groups 1,2,3,4).
                          • The top two teams from each group went thorough to the Quarter Finals (start of the knockout stages).
                          • England were in Group 3 and finished second place in the group. They were finally knocked out in the Quarter Final match against West Germany on 14 June.
                          • The England World Cup Squad released a single "Back Home" which reached number one on the UK singles chart.
                          • Brazil won the final against Italy on 21 June 1970 (Brazil 4 – 1 Italy). This was Brazil's third win, so they were allowed to keep the Jules Rimet Trophy permanently.

Apollo 13 launched on 11 April. Despite the explosion, the crew returned safely to Earth on 17 April.
                          • The mission was to have included a lunar landing at Fra Mauro, but that was abandoned.
                          • Afterwards the mission was called a "successful failure".
                          • There were no more Apollo missions in 1970.

Other UK number one singles included:
                          • Edison Lighthouse - "Love Grows (Where My Rosemary Goes)"
                          • Simon and Garfunkel - "Bridge Over Troubled Water"
                          • Norman Greenbaum - "Spirit In The Sky"
                          • Mungo Jerry - "In The Summertime"
                          • Elvis Presley - "The Wonder Of You"
                          I am 13 ... times 4.
