In the UK the summer was long and very hot.... the grass turned yellow in the worst drought for 250 years. !

In 1976 the safety pin becomes an unlikely item of fashion as the Punks
    move in on the scene.
By December the Sex Pistols and Souixie Sue were on TV with Bill Grundy..... it became the Punk Happening of the year !

    New TV of the time.....

Duchess of Duke Street.... (kind of BBCs answer to Upstairs Downstairs)
    Bouquet of Barbed Wire....
    Muppet Show
    George and Mildred
Just William ( must have been the one with Bonny Langford )
    The New Avengers
    The Glittering Prizes.
Angels ( twice weekly ) (think Shirley Cheriton was in it .)

Sebastiane... (the only movie ever filmed with Latin dialogue)
Carry on England ( a big flop )

Peter Sellers met the 21 year old Lynne Fredericks.

Harold Wilson suddenly stepped down and Callaghan took over the reins.
Jeremy Thorpe resigned leadership of the Liberals.
    Soweto uprising left 100 dead.
Ulrike Meinhoff hung herself in prison ( at least, that was the official story ! )
It was a very hot summer in the UK... perhaps that contributed to the Nottinghill Riots which left 456 injured.

Viking 1 sent back colour pics from the surface of Mars.

Fernando was a massive hit for Abba
In Autumn Abba released the LP... Arrival.

Brotherhood of Man won the Eurovision with " Save Your Kisses for Me "
Meanwhile, down in Brighton the young punk Billy Broad gave up his studies and changed his name to Billy Idol.

Agatha Christie... the UKs richest author... died age 78.
Over in Paris they began a Concorde service down to Rio...

James Hunt won the Formula 1 World Championship in a McLaren. Britain would have to wait 16 years for their next F1 title winner - Nigel Mansell in 1992.

I thought Angels first appeared around 1978 or 1979.

I made my 1st Communion this year, went to Dublin zoo on a school tour and got lost. My auntie took me and my cousin to the cinema to see 'The Slipper and the Rose'....think that was in '76.

This was a big year for me because I left school and started work.

The first number one single of the year was Mamma Mia by Abba and the last was When A Child Is Born by Johnny Mathis.
The best song of the year had to be Combine Harvester by The Wurzels.

When I think of 1976' I immediately think of 'ladybirds' - they were everywhere and the front lawn grass turned yellow due to the scorching heat!

I remember going to 'Woolies' (Woolworths) to buy 'Mississippi' by Pussycat for my Mum's birthday .... did it cost 60p? either way I'd saved a couple of weeks pocket money to buy it!

My team Lincoln City FC won the Fourth Division Championship under Graham Taylor breaking all kinds of records. I also remember going to Hillards (later Tesco) with Dad on a Friday teatime and buying pots of coleslaw from the deli counter, but not being allowed any of the frozen treats/cakes because money was tight i.e. Mum wrote a strict list and Dad had to stick to it, or else?!!! ..... oops, I tell a lie, we were allowed the odd 'birdseye mousse'!

Btw: Did anyone ever try those cans of '1 Cal' pop .... always wondered what they tasted like?

Lilacmoon, I loved Onecal pop, the lime flavoured one! Green can with onecal down the side! Very nice.

And as for Pussycat's Mississippi, well, my Dad got it from the Jukebox guy in the pub! seems like yesterday..............
