I was having a telephone conversation with a friend of mine this evening, and the subject of Gene Wilder came up when we were discussing films, especially Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory, and she said that no one could have been Wonka but Wilder. Incidentally, back in August 2016 I was listening to Radio 2 on my radio while on the coach to Cornwall when I heard of Wilder's death mentioned - when I got to my destination, I saw BBC Breakfast the following morning (my birthday) from my Premier Inn Room and heard the tributes from fellow actors - admittedly, they focused a lot more on the Willy Wonka film with the actors who played one of the kids paying tribute.
Stir Crazy was another film that Wilder was in (saw it post-News at Ten on Friday night in the 1990s), and that was a great comedy film, even if it was over the top, but Wonka would be what he would be remembered for. A lot of people would have said that he would have made a great Doctor Who as well.
I've everything I need to keep me satisfied
There's nothing you can do to make me change my mind
I'm having so much fun
My lucky number's one
Ah! Oh! Ah! Oh!
