Sadly the Goalkeeping legend Gordon Banks - yet another member of Enlish Football Team's Greatest Day from our 1 major and only win on that balmy day in July 196, has passed away aged 81
The definitive goalkeeper. If you read George Layton's short story The Fib, Banks gets an honorary mention - I am certain that the character Gordon Barraclough was named after him.
He also has a street named after him close to where I live.
I've everything I need to keep me satisfied
There's nothing you can do to make me change my mind
I'm having so much fun
My lucky number's one
Ah! Oh! Ah! Oh!
Absolute legend! I was just too young to remember '66 but he was still the best in our fruitless attempts to qualify for soccerball tournies for some time!
RIP Banks of England!
Time flies like the wind, fruit flies like bananas - go figure!
When football was harder balls much heavier a player from that team supposedly got dementia because of the effect of repeated heading of those old balls..
Yes i heard the other day about him losing an eye incredible story.
Pitches back then were not as pristine as todays are.
No subs either.
And pay was a lot less too.
R i p gordon.
And how he worked i think in the coal industry carry heavy bags of coal which give him huge strength and a powerful physique.
Very sad to hear that Gordon Banks has passed away. I can remember watching that incredible save against Brazil in the 1970 World Cup, when Brazil had arguably the greatest international team of all time. I also remember reading about the crash that ended his career. Probrbly the best goalkeeper ever to wear an England jersey. RIP Gordon.
