  • Geoff Capes

R.I.P Geoffrey Lewis Capes was an English Police constable, shot putter, strongman, and Highland Games competitor. He was famous in the UK in the 1980s for his sporting prowess and appearances on television in shows such as Superstars and the World's Strongest Man.

I remember him mainly for The Worlds Strongest Man.Something we watched as a family and of course we all sat there rooting for him to win.

Capes always had that "bearded caveman" look to him wherever he was seen, and I suppose he was seen as a superhero as well, especially to youngsters at a time when movies and comics depicted them so much. In the 1980s he was always seen as the "strongest man in residance" when he appeared on sporting and children's TV shows like Record Breakers or Blue Peter, usually weightlifting or pulling vecihles behind him. He was always a cliche for someone being strong and could do anything.

I also believe that in the 1980s or 1990s he gave his support for a campaign with regards to eating fish and chips and encouraging us to visit local fish and chip shops a lot more often. Just a few years ago I saw a sign on a chip shop front window which had Capes eating fish and chips, promoting this campaign, and I believe that they must have had it on there for a good 20-odd years since the campaign started!
