  • RIP Marianne Faithfull

Singer and actress Marianne Faithfull has passed away at the age of 78. RIP.

Marianne Faithfull was almost an icon of 1960s Flower Power and free-spirited values which fitted in well within the latter half of that decade - especially as she did look rather like a model starring in a 1967 Harmony Hairspray advert! She was a great singer - This Little Bird from 1965 was probably the best of the hits she had which made it into the British charts - it is one of those songs which sounds great listening last thing at night - very Bacharach-ish, I suppose. I wasn't too fond of As Tears Go By mostly because I couldn't imagine anyone on Stars in their Eyes doing that one! "It is the evening of the day... I sit and watch the children play..." I often confuse her as a singer with Mary Hopkin - very similar in style and ilk and also the time that they were in the charts. The two artistes seem to merge into each other when one hears their music.

Faithfull also did a bit of acting - The Girl on a Motorcycle was first seen across post-News at Ten regional ITV showings, usually on Friday nights or weekends in the mid 1970s to around 1980 - Granada kicking the trend off immediately after some Golf highlights at 11.50 pm on Friday 20th September 1974 (lasting till 1.30 am - the latest time for any TV station to be on the air the night) - but I remember it being shown not long after Channel 5 started in 1997 during the early hours of the morning one weekend (11.45 pm on Friday 19th September 1997 in that "TV Offal" slot). Cue Faithfull, who would have just been 22-years-old at the time, starring as the title role in the film - a girl indeed on a motorcycle, natch, wearing a black leather bodysuit, and riding the aforementioned contraption. My memory of that film was a man stopping her, on the motorcycle possibly a police officer, reaching out to a glove compartment-box underneath the rider's seat to out something in or take something out, and after closing it, patting Faithfull's black leather derriere from behind before driving off again. Amazing how one remembers that scene! She was the spouse of Mick Jagger in the late 1960s and I might be confusing her with Jane Asher but I thought that she was with Paul McCartney at some point as well - all these singers and the like seem to blend into each other when one examines the music scene back then.

She was a beautiful lady back in the day and even at the age of 78, one takes up the invitation to mourn her passing right now. Another 20th century icon has now passed.
I've everything I need to keep me satisfied
There's nothing you can do to make me change my mind
    I'm having so much fun
    My lucky number's one
    Ah! Oh! Ah! Oh!

I thought sadly that Marianne had passd on a bit back

I only liked a few of her Songs but to me she was in the same vain as Pet Clarke and Doris Day in they only had a few great great songs but those great great songs helped them to dine out for years

        Rip Marianne Faithfull

Same here Darren - though I must admit I thought she had passed on a while back

Somehow though Marianne is one of those people you always expect to be around or/and here of

It is the same as with Bryan Murphy who has just passed on - they are "old Skool" and we might not have liked every song or any song/programme they did but they "was always there and their name meant something" un-like you' can probably say in 40/50 years time about Love Island and Towie/Geordie Shore stars and people like Stacey Soloman - only a few like Joe Wicks will be remembered!
