Well, I believe that it wasn't tolerated in any of the schools by default - my own mother so right-wing when she was alive - she even called me a wimp because I had not assaulted someone who had assaulted me - bear in mind, she used to use phrases like "woolly heads" for those people with dreadlocks, and referred to a local shop run by Asians as - well, you can guess what she called them. Perhaps I had to go ahead with it to prove to her that it was wrong, and I was proved right as a result? By the way, my mother passed away nearly 20 years ago, and the school closed for good nearly 25 years ago. She had got me into a lot of trouble because I took her advice when I was being bullied, but it was alright as she didn't have to attend the school in question.

You do have to remember that when Nottinghamshire County Council was the LEA for Nottingham city schools (which was where I was educated at), it still had a lot of rural schools in their patch, which obviously increased when Nottingham City Council became a unitary authority in 1998 - the county council became a middle class "more tea, vicar?" rural council more or less, something that I have always strongly disagreed with from a local government level. I couldn't wait to move to either the Gedling or Rushcliffe borough parts outside the city as I was worried that Nottingham would become a sub-London area of the East Midlands. And it took nearly 20 years for me to do just that.

I would probably have had my backside caned at home if I had shouted this at a kid at school.

This is why I was referred to as a deep mind racist rather than a (conventional) racist. In other words, an intelligent intellectual rather than a shallow and puerile commoner.

It made me wonder what "the norm" in the title was referring to - doing something that a strict teacher wouldn't approve of, but a nicer teacher would turn a blind eye to?

I was bullied at school, and I was obviously stupid enough to take notice of my right-wing mother and her suggestion as to how to defend myself against them. She said "tell them to get back on the banana boat". I told her that it was racist and she shouldn't say things like that, and what happened after that, my response had proved my point about the fact that she was racist. My mother also had alternative words for those sort of people, and basically she came from an age where people were less offended if those words or phrases were used in public.

Being accused of absurd biological theories in a history lesson.

I stated that white European people originate from the Indus Valley and that the out of Africa theory is a dirty 19th century lie. I then explained about how modern day sub-Saharan Africans are not the ancestors of Europeans because they have evolved too recently into their current form. There was a time tens of thousands of years ago when people looked similar to modern day residents of Iran or Pakistan but nobody looked like a sub-Saharan African because they had not yet evolved.

I got suspended for a few days whilst investigations commenced. Concerns were raised at a meeting involving my tutor and the history teacher amongst other officials that I was potentially a deep mind racist; and who or where I am obtaining such theories from; and whether I should be subjected to formal discipline or treatment – the LEA had to be informed about the event by law and it would remain on my file until I was 19.

A Hindu friend who supported what I said then explained that it's all detailed in ancient Sanskrit documents was not suspended. This caused a lot of consternation with my mother who suspected that the school exercised double standards based on skin tone and (more recent than the Indus Valley) country of origin. My mother then raised the question whether only white European kids can be racist, so if black or Asian kid came out with an absurd biological theory they would get away with it? The school tried to defend their position by claiming that racism doesn't just mean overt and brazen acts but also extends to biological theories, but they would not directly answer the question.

Eventually, the school admitted that the LEA holds a stance that racism is the sum of prejudice and power, and because ethnic minorities lack privilege and power (in Britain), it follows that they cannot be racist. Therefore, to acknowledge that non-whites can be racist is actually a concession to racism. This was why I was suspended and my friend wasn't.

When I was about 9 years old , being a football obsessed lad I was outside playing 'wallie' in the rain , alone ... then one shot went badly astray and smashed a huge classroom window !!

I got the cane on both hands !
( usually they went for just your non-writing hand ) .

Also got the cane , just on one hand - about the same time for getting angry with another lad and pushing him into the goldfish pond ... it was only shallow
The danger was the surrounding concrete flag edging ....

The prefects at our school were allowed to give us 'lines' for misbehaving

We had to do the 'lines' in their common room which had a record player

So I purposely misbehaved to get the 'lines' so I could sit in their room and listen to their music

Until the prefects realised what I was doing, that is lol

After that I seemed to be able to get away with anything

My motto was that if you don't go to school, you can't get in trouble. But on the other hand, that wasn't quite true for obvious reasons...

May-be george - I am unsure or morever it might have been Trisha or with which Tucker saved Trisha in some form or other like Togger did years later with Tanya ((Tannoy) when she met Jean-Paul on line and it turned out he was 25 or something. I do recall though that the amazingly funny Chloe from the last few Series' of GH with Andrea and Allison (played by the equaly talented Georgia May Foote) certainly did this as it was one of the bright spots (episodes) of that appauling last Sries of GH - but though this falls out of the DYR Timescale yes I am sure it was replicated as well as a possible Tucker-Trisha and Togger-Tanya scenario

I got told off for jumping over the 'bummer's mat' at school. Basically, anyone who trod on it (just a hessian mat in the corridor) was a bummer. Anyway, as I approached, I ran and leapt over it and got caught by the English teacher who made me walk over it properly to everyone's amusement - and he was oblivious to the shameful act of doing this

For some reason the bummer's mat makes me giggle I'm sure we had stuff like that but I can't remember what the forbidden actions were.

For repeatedly referring one of our teachers as 'David Bellamy' - he finally had enough of us doing it and exploded, mainly at me. It was scary, he went all red with anger.
For breaking the door handles off by bending them upwards and snapping the square rod that went through the middle.
Probably quite a bit more if I think about it........

Got dragged in front of the headmaster for doing "WWF Wrestling" on the Drama Studio stage one lunchtime, there were about 20 of us crammed on there having a right Royal Rumble...

At my secondary school we had to walk down the road to a nearby sports centre for PE because we didn't have the facilities on-site. I once bunked off with two of my friends and one of them put her foot in a manhole and had to have stitches in her leg, so we all got loads of detentions and had to be "escorted" to PE from then on.

I got in trouble during a German lesson once because we had an assignment to write about ourselves as if we were writing from the future, then the teacher would read them out and we'd have to guess who had written what. I put down my job as "porn star" and the teacher read it out as "adult film actress" in a deadpan voice, then lectured me about how this wasn't as funny as I thought it was (no, it was funnier)

how long ago was this mate.

It was in 1992 i was 14 at the time. Teachers hauled me out from behind the curtain, and i took a bow on the stage in front of the whole school (years7-12) which got even more laughs, it took about 20 mins for everybody to calm down and teachers to get back to some kind of order. I became something of a school celebrity after that. I still know a couple of old school mates and when we talk about our school days we still laugh about it.
