Like at my first School in French we all imitated an Xmas TV add and to see who could gottan away withy it but some mates grassed on me to win "said bet" lol

I went to college day release after leaving school and starting work. We still had a yearly report that we were given and a copy sent to the employer. Attendance was something our employer took great notice of along with grades quite naturally as they were paying for us to attend. I was on a different course to the others and attended college a different day. When we got our reports at the end of the first year it became evident that they had been skipping some days and got in trouble for it with our employer. As I was on a different course on another day I had no idea what they had been doing. They got quite a dressing down and didn't get their full pay rise for that year. They didn't do it again so far as I am aware.

It's noteworthy that employers and further education do not take school reports into account or ask for them. Not sure about independent schools as they might ask a previous school for some form of reference. Therefore factors like how well you behaved, how hard you worked, how smartly you dressed at school, and so on, are irrelevant in the real world after finishing school.

In the light of this, I have wondered why so many parents take school reports so seriously or take them to heart. I previously mentioned potential for child abuse. I also think it's pointless telling parents about issues that they have very little control over at school. What is the parent supposed to even do with this information? Is it a case of the teacher failing in their duty?

Would it be better if school reports were written to be read by the students themselves rather than their parents?

One thing I found about my school reports is that they were not very helpful. Like the Daily Mail, they identified problems and deficiencies but did not suggest solutions or useful advice for parents.

I think our reports came out around the same time as Parents' Evening i.e. fairly late in the Spring term. I was generally a well behaved lad at school and worked at least as hard as everyone else so didn't really fear the report or what my parents would be told. One thing that used to appear on our secondary school reports was a mark for appearance i.e. how smart your uniform was - don't know if that was common. It was our form teacher that would determine the mark. I think I always got an 'A' yet don't think I was any smarter than others in the class, so maybe he gave everyone an 'A'. Can't recall my parents commenting much on my reports. They were sealed when we got them and we were not supposed to open them prior to giving them to our parents.

I have seen images of a few school reports from the 1970s and 80s that a few courageous people have published online. What strikes me about the primary school reports are the illegible handwriting of many teachers (printed / typed reports seem to be very rare) and the inconsistency in what is assessed and how it's assessed between different schools in this pre National Curriculum era. If I had the time I would collect these reports and analyse them in more depth. They are very different from the reports my primary school issued in the 1990s.

I consider myself as part of the first generation of kids who had a modern school education, and anything pre NC is some mysterious prehistoric era I have no practical experience of. I have drawn parallels between the introduction of the NC and the French Revolution!

Does anybody have any in depth knowledge of these pre NC school reports providing details on exactly how teachers should assess students in the absence of a national benchmark? Were these reports highly opinionated and low on hard facts? Did they overemphasise certain things like punctuality, beautiful handwriting, and good behaviour and underemphasise academic prowess? Did LEAs have standard templates for school reports or did individual schools create them?

I don't know if this has been posted before, but here goes....

The school report during my time at comprehensive school, came out twice a year. The first one came out at Christmas, the second around Whitsun IIRC.

Did you fear and dread the report? Or were not bothered?
Was your report always good? Did you ever have a bad report?

Did your parents ever write any comment on the return slip they had to sign?

Did you keep your reports, or were they thrown away shortly after?

Generally, my reports were on the good side until I reached the age of thirteen. Thereafter, some of the teachers comments were far less than satisfactory. I did have one really bad report in 1981. I will not go into it, but Kevin the Teenager would have been proud.

I had these at Primary, Marc - this idea of a "General Report" was the norm then but never in my Secondary Days ..... more-ever for me it would have been a case of "being on report (not given 1) for being a following Lamb that copied other lads and ended in the most trouble as the result!!

I remember reading a school report that my sister had. For RE, the teacher referred to her as "lazy and disruptive" or something like that - I cannot imagine her being like that in class, even though due our different ages, we were never at school together.

I don't think we really had any at either of my Comps/Secondary or Primary - it was just sort of something read to Parents - nothing else

Thankfully though my 1st Secondary was a dive and the only Primary I did was top notch I am so glad I never lived in this Ofstead and Red Tape Burachrat time they do today (let alone for end of term reportsa) never mind other issues at shool/s and matters/things!!

I know that Roger Hargreaves wrote a book about Mr Tickle (which had a teacher in the book, ironically enough), but Allan Ahlberg could have written one called Mr Tickle the Teacher...

I remember Mr Tickle: his long arm reached into the classroom and tickled the schoolmaster's ear. Nice.

The big fuss about parents' evenings - anyone would have thought that it was the Queen and Prince Philip were coming to the school rather our parents visiting.
