    Re: School sports/PE/Games

I remember having mixed feelings about compulsory sport at school especially as it was every single day, except for Wednesday afternoon when we had Corps. Often I thought I would rather be sitting around being lazy. Many of my mates gave it up in the final two years but I was in a House team for Rugger and eventually played for the school as well and so was told that I pretty much had to carry on! I developed an extreme tolerance of cold because of it. Sport was considered more important than academic achievement at my school and part of 'character building' (!). Looking back I think it did me a lot of good and gave me skills that I wouldn't have had otherwise as well as a lot of exercise and a few hard knocks. For my sins I continued to play at university.

Just checked...Secondary Moderns were introduced in 1944, but I think my dad's was just a secondary school--kids left school at 14 back then, so I think he would have probably left before it converted.

I think it was about an hour. They would hang around for about 45 mins then onto the field for a 10 min kickaround. As for sports, football and general running around were as varied as it got. This would have been around 1945 and the establishment was a normal secondary school just for boys. I think this would have been prior to secondary moderns, but I am not sure.

Same here Darren pal - I don't even recall being in a position (that as the year went by the Teachers supposedly made us all Captains each week) that I got picked as this as was fort other things non-sporting, like aat Primary School

We had a Harvest Festival over two weeks in Year 5 or 6 and the Teachers said we'd all get a chance to participate by handing a Basket over to this Old Persons Complex near by. Admitted I was poorly for part of the first week and returned the 2nd but it never worked like that just as for Sport or other "select" things that was an unusual given in certain Subjects with similar happenings too

Same here regarding house teams on sports day, though we competed as house teams at both junior and secondary school.

We had house games at our secondary school.

Only got picked for the tug-o-war team, and we won every match with me as the anchor, until a whingy face complained that he wanted to be the anchor. Got his wish and what happened? We lost those matches.

Another hayfever sufferer here. I hated PE and games in the couple of months before summer holidays. My eyes would weep and itch, my nose would run like a tap and my chest would tighten up and I would be wheezing. Thankfully, I was excused when it got too bad.

Our school had a "lost bin" where spare stuff got put, if you forgot anything you had to borrow something out of it. If a boy forgot his shorts and there were no spares, he had to wear a pair of PE Knickers.
