  • Domestic Science

The first lesson was to do toast and coffee.

Then next rock buns. Mine looked so nice, even got praised by my teacher, but my mum asked at home later if I had used cement instead of flour.

Our school called it Home Economics, I remember making rock cakes as well, our teacher use to score us out of 10 at the end of each lesson

Does anybody know exactly what year the subject stopped being called domestic science? When my mother was at school during the 1980s, it was called home economics. When I was at school during the early 2000s, it was called food technology. Now it is called food preparation and nutrition.

The subject was referred to as domestic science in Adrian Mole, but it was called home economics at my mother's secondary school around the same time the book was written.
