Alas, I only know some words. I do understand the concepts of Hiragana and Katakana. I can read words, but not sure on the meaning. I can say basic sentences though

          French and German at school.
The former proved particularly useful, as I married a French woman.

I did French and German in year 7 of High School. I preferred German. For some reason — when I got to year 8 — the new acting Head Master decided that French was the only language we should learn. From then onwards, it went downhill. The teaches who taught French were not really clued-up on the language. All we did was to copy words from the blackboard into our text books. Languages can not be taught this way. So, alas to say, I can no longer speak French or German.

German: mostly because: A) Our Languages teacher was German by birth and so thus it was her mother tongue; and B) Our school was twinned with another in Germany.
