  • Telephone chatlines for singles?

    Hello there!

I'm writing a short script that takes place in the 90s, and I'm interested in the UK telephone chatlines.

NOT the ones where a hot girl is supposed to talk with you, but where you talk with other callers. This would happen either by services based on browsing audio profiles or a live "telephone chatroulette", where you are connected straight with another caller on the line.

Do you have memories, knowledge or some hearsay about them? Names, where they advertised, how did they work etc.? Or what could be another good place to go and ask?

Any bit of information is warmly welcome. Thank you very much in advance!

    Re: Telephone chatlines for singles?

In the 1980s as a teen I and some of my friends used a service from bt called Talkabout, you'd dial and join a group of other teens and chat, there was an adult who moderated the conversation and disconnected trouble makers etc. It obviously cost money so my parents put a lock on the phone which I used to pick with tweezers I think when they were out. Thinking back it was the telephone equivalent of an internet chat room.
The only thing to look forward to is the past

One episode of Father Ted has a good spoof of phone chat services with one for priests.
