Saw a programme about The Flying Scotsman which had been restored,it was running on The Seven Valley Railway Line

went to see the flying scotsman when it was at bury at the start of the year. when it came rolling into the station, the platform shook. awesome sight.

While everybody remembers L.N.E.R. class A3, 4472 Flying Scotsman, what about L.N.E.R. class A4, 4468 Mallard? This locomotive seems forgotten by the general public. On 3rd July 1938, this locomotive achieved the world speed record for a steam locomotive, 126 mph. This record still stands unbroken to this day. This locomotive should really take the crown.

The Mallard does have a prominent place in the York Museum.

There was a good documentary about the record breaking run a few years ago.

I remember my wife & I travelling on a Paddington to Penzance day return for £4. Unbelievable value from the days of the Merrymakers which ran between the late 70's & early 80's.

Also BR used to run Mystery tours which would take you to all sorts of interesting places & half the fun used to be trying to guess your final destination from the route taken. These trips were also a Mecca for the trainspotters as invariably, unusual locomotives were provided as motive power.

Other destinations I can remember travelling to include Chester, Llandudno, Weymouth, Great Yarmouth, Blackpool, Sheffield, Liverpool all at very reasonable ticket prices. No way would the privatised Rail operators be able (or willing) to offer this kind of travel these days.

I well remember special offers on the railway. IIRC back in February 1981, there was the "February Fiver". You could go just about anywhere for a day return of no more than £5. I well remember going to Birmingham with a friend. Did not have to book in advance, just turn up and buy the ticket.
