A silver diesel Vauxhall Nova, brand new to the driving school when I sat behind the wheel for the first time. It had 5 gears and a cassette player and everything!

The first one I owned was a mini. I agree about cost. I drove for 20 years but have not driven for the last ten. I certainly couldn't afford to run a car on my low wage, but I live in a small town where most things are a convenient walk away and I car-share with a neighbour to get to work. I'm actually quite a happy non-driver these days.

Re: What car did you learn to drive in?
We allways had several cars in the yard for stock car racing. I learnt myself in a Triumph 2500pi which the local fire station sold me for £12,they were going to practise rescue work on it so it was saved by me. A bit naughty but several of us drove at an early age as we lived in a very 'quiet' area. I did get suspended as the head saw me parking half a mile from school to walk the rest of the way. Oops. My parents made me take out the front and rear screens (for racing) so it couldnt be taken out, they didnt realise how easy they went back in.

Re: What car did you learn to drive in?
My driving instructors car was a yellow Austin Allegro - I think it was the 1st car with a square (with round corners) steering wheel. My first vehicle was my brothers 'cast off' a red Anglia Van with a go faster white stripe down the side, I Only had it for a few months before I bought my own Ford Cortina MkII.

I also learnt to drive in a Nova as well as an old Morris Ital (drive that and you can drive anything!!!!)
In the end I gave up and asked the insurers what cars would be under £500 insurance and the cars listed was basically any car over 25 with 1300 cc engine or less (cortina mk1, escort mk1, cortina mk2, morris marina, hillman imp, anglia, triumph herald etc was all listed).
As my Dad owned a Marina when I was young, I developed a soft spot for them (odd i know) - that said it has never let me down unlike the VW Polo I have!

first car for me was a Mk3 cortina estate 2.0 XL in a very bright green, drank like a fish after my mate swapped the carb out for a twin webber 55 off a big capri.
My instructor taught me in a Nissan Micra until the driving school bought a batch of Mini Metro's in about 1988/89
awful car those metro's, i broke the gearbox twice

Re: What car did you learn to drive in?
I took a few refresher lessons in a Rover Metro. It still makes my skin crawl as I didn't like the instructor. He said I had nice eyebrows (?!) and kept putting his hand over mine on the gear stick. Good job it was only 3 lessons, creep.
This was about 15 years ago but he's still an instructor nowLast edited by Trickyvee; 30-09-2010, 23:09.1976 Vintage
