The 1983 film Wargames starring Matthew Broderick & Ally Sheedy came out concerning nuclear war & The MAD Treaty (Mutually Assured Destruction) thereof.
In the film David Lightman (Matthew Broderick) with his gf Jennifer (Ally Sheedy) accidentally hack into the WOPR (War Operations Planned Response) defence computer at NORAD Cheyenne Mountain whilst looking for Protovision a game software company to find their new games not yet released onto the market
The computer asks "Would you like a nice game of chess?"
David replies "Maybe later. Let's play Global Thermo Nuclear War"
Joshua (WOPR) says "Fine"
A Global Thermonuclear War scenario is displayed on David's computer
Joshua asks "Which side do you want?"
"The Russians" replies David
Whilst playing the game/simulation an imminent missile warning displays with klaxons sounding at NORAD's control room at Cheyenne Mountain
NORAD goes into full alert.
Some time later David cuts the connection thus ending the imminent missile attack at Cheyenne Mountain
NORAD returns to DEFCON 5
The WOPR's technician runs into the control room saying an attack simulation had been fed into the computer
His assistant comes in and says they were unable to trace the call but it did come from the Seattle area
Anyway, eventually NORAD goes into DEFCON 1 after Joshua continues playing the game to the point he is ready to launch the ICBM's
Russia is denying everything which is correct as they are not launching an attack; it is a computer generated simulation
Just as NORAD is going to press the button David & Jennifer come in with Stephen (WOPR's designer). Stephen asks Barringer (the NORAD chief) how far has it gone. "We are just about to launch a counter attack"
"It's not real write off the attack"
"Do you really believe the enemy would send so many missiles subs & ships without provocation knowing our only option would be to annihilate them? You are talking to a machine don't act like one"
Darringer says to the President "We can not confirm the inbounds"
Barringer calls the first three air bases which are the target telling his assistant to launch at his command
He tells the air bases the current situation
After those three hits he calls them asking them if they are still on
They are alive; no missile hit
The whole room cheers & Barringer says "Stand down the missiles!!"
It is not all over. Joshua is searching for the launch codes to launch the missiles 'himself'
David eventually calls up Tic Tac Toe/Naughts & Crosses. Through this game where there is no winner Joshua learns the valuable lesson that in a nuclear war there are no winners
Then Joshua says - guess lol
"The only option is not to play
"Would you like a nice game of chess?"
