  • Hello!

I've been registered for a while, but it's just lately that I've been thinking a lot about my childhood. My son is just into his teens now and it's so different for him. I feel sorry for his generation really.

I was born in 75 as you'd guess from my username. I really think the 80s were the best time to be a kid! There was this big explosion of TV shows, toys and sweets - and yet we were outside so much too, and I don't recall any panic over cartoons or sweets because there was a natural moderation, no 24 hour TV, and sweet money given on Friday that had to last all week. My son and his friends just want to sit in front of a computer screen and it's such a waste, they could end up spending 50 years of their working lives doing that! I suggest they might want to take some sandwiches and go out to the park for a few hours and they look at me like I'm nuts!

I think my insomnia is subsiding so I'm going back to sleep but I just wanted to say to those who understand - we had it really good didn't we!!

    Re: Hello!

I hear you. I grew up in the '70s and believe that it was still possible to have that sort of Huck Finn childhood back then and even into the early '80s. It was all before the advent of helicopter parenting and bubble-wrapped kids. Sadly, as the population increased so did distances so its not just Mum and Dad who have the long commute anymore. Once again just going to school has become something of a trek for kids today who have to depend on their parents to chauffeur them everywhere -- many of them places that were once within easy walking or biking distance for us kids in the '70s.

One sad sign of the times is around two or three o clock in the afternoon when school lets out, traffic in my neighbourhood is absolutely horrendous. There are two streets around the corner from the nearby elementary school that are often jam-packed with the overflow of parents waiting to pick up their kids.
