  • Two ounces of those please

Does anyone else remember being able to buy sweets from the big jars in two ounce bags?
I know it ended up in most shops you could get a quarter but I still remember dithering and getting smaller bags so I could spread my coppers

On the street I grew up on there was a tobacconists that naturally sold sweets too. Everything was in jars, except chocolate bars which were quite expensive and upmarket for the time. I once remember standing at the door counting the jars and there must have been at least 150 different types. I would have counted through the window but for some reason the tobacconist had these really high thin windows that even a grown man would struggle to see through. I think they had mix ups on the counter too, which I thought was unusual because most shops would have had newspapers. I think maybe the local shops people had a gentlemen's agreement not to step on each others toes because the Post Office/newsagents only started selling cigarettes after the tobacconists shut up shop.

I do remember buying two ounces of jarred sweets, probably when I didn't have enough money for a quarter.

Usually small sweeties, like Tom Thumb Pips or Floral Gums?

Yes, I do. My sister had a sweet shop and she used to make up two ounce bags for the school kids.

Last time I was in Kilarnney in Ireland (1997?), there was a old abandonded (I assume) sweet shop, which had not been touched since the 70's.. amazing to look in the window and see the old packaging still on display. A real time capsule
