IIRC St Alban's prison had become a council depot by the 1970s & just needed some light touches to look the part.

The hospital used for the outsides changed at one time because of complaints from the relatives of residents, who were concerned people would think it was a place for the criminally insane.

Ten points if you know which prison Porridge was filmed at Richard

It was set in slade prison

none of the filming was ever done in a prison as the home office refused to let them

the main gates you see are the gates of st albans prison which was no longer in use

all the interiors you see are at ealing studios where they built a set

out side shots of the prison are actually a psychiatric hospital
