Those were the days when you passed your driving test and had your freedom on the roads gaining experience.When there was no mobile phones to distract you drivers had respect for one another.Far less traffic on the roads.This was 1981 onwards

Today 2015 its all gone to the dogs.Too many cars on the road more stressful driving trying to get from A to B.The idiots about are unbelievable got back from weekly shopping trip.This youngster in her 20s went through a red light speeding,this was the first set of lights.The second set she went through red when the cars to the left of her were on green and turning right.She nearly smashed into the side of this older lady.To add to this she had a phone in her right hand.The law is too soft.It annoys me someone like her gets away with it or causes accidents and we have to pay more insurance

its like everything most things back then where better more enjoyable.
too many mobile phones now which leads to more accidents.

i never drove a car but going on a drive when i was younger was really enjoyable as u say.

im glad i never got a car.

Dont blame you darren My husband and I have said when we are old enough for a bus pass with free transport the car is going.
God I wish we could go back to the 70,sI hate mobile smart phones even more,we managed before they came along

the only thing is now if you do that to much traffic on roads carnt do short cuts on bus
I was down wales 2 weeks ago and traffic was that bad we turned round parked car up and walked to town
we beat the bus lol

Ram her from behind & push her off the road. Yank her door open (if locked smash window) & grab ignition keys. Throw keys into the distance

Unless the 1980s were a sweet spot for driving my Dad was mentioning recently how motorways could get scary in the 1970s.

This was due to drivers not leaving enough distance.

Both older drivers more used to A road or newer ones only recently qualified to drive were just as guilty.

I mean drivers did have more respect in the past.I have always kept my distance from the vehicle in front of me even now,but am nervous when someone is up my tailgate.
When I first passed my test I was living on a main road,so reversing out onto the road was a challenge.I enjoyed my first motorway run no roundabouts and traffic lights to contend with.

its soo expensive getting a car and everything else u have to do to keep it going mate.

but i loved the long drives my dad and me and me and my uncle had.

i too wish i could go back in time to the eighties like u say mate no smart phones etc less accidents.

One little, albeit illegal tip of advice, to fox the tailgaters on the motorway:

Back in the 70's a friend of my older brother, who was old enough to hold a driving license owned a 3.0 Capri Broadspeed Turbo (sort of an early Cosworth or Imprezza or Evolution hot head car). This friend of my brother's Dad owned a car scrap yard. I am sure Dad bought & insured this card for his favourite son. Anyway..... one day a wrecked police traffic car is brought in to be crushed; obviously rammed in a high speed pursuit by the 'bandit' vehicle. Before being crushed the emergency beacons & sirens had been removed. (Such items are legal for anyone to purchase (even now) but of course illegal to use) http://www.haztec.uk/

Matey somehow got his mucky little paws on these items He installed the strobe beacons behind the radiator grill to use as covert beacons. The rotating dome beacon he stored in his glove box out of the prying eyes of passing police. The siren he installed under the bonnet & installed the tactile operating panel on the dashboard.

On the M6 northbound around Keele Services Area Stafford/Cheshire he got stuck behind a driver driving at national speed limit 70mph on lane three preventing anyone to overtake. Of course he can be undertaken but that is an illegal & dangerous maneouve lest you are side swiped by the driver in front pulling over to lane two. A few flashes of the headlights there is no response. A few more; still no response

So on come the front strobes & siren He had never seen a car pull over to lane two so quickly

As matey passed the other driver mouthed sorry but my mate gave him the 'V' sign

The glove compartment dome beacon was for another use as it would in this situation & generally attract the attention of passing motorway police even switched off if permananthly installed on the roof.

3am one morning matey was driving north same motorway when he was first to arrive at the scene of a multiple pile up (motorway multi vehicle accident). Quickly he positioned his car across all three lanes shielding the accident. He placed the dome beacon on the roof, plugged it into the lighter socket & switched it on. He ran to the nearest motorway emergency phone and alerted police (this was pre-mobile phone invention)

The police duly arrived and officially blocked off the carriageway. One police officer came over & tried to confiscate the beacon claiming an offence was being committed in that he was impersonating a police vehicle. "How am I impersonating a police vehicle officer?" The police officer replied "Emergency blue beacons are for authorised advance driver trained emergency vehicle drivers" Matey replied thus "If you are saying that then I am also impersonating an ambulance & fire appliance vehicle. If I was driving displaying said emergency blue beacon in running mode then you have a point & I would admit that fact. But my vehicle is stationary so that does not apply. There is no offence being committed by having a flashing blue light on my vehicle as it is only warning oncoming drivers of this serious incident so that they will slow down & stop" The copper had no answer to that

My husband used to break suddenly to make them think behind he was doing an emergency stop.It did work cause they would back off

I sometimes do that hoping to be rear ended so their insurance will get me a new rear end NOT to be taken seriously
