This is on TV tonight.... should be good.
Children's TV On Trial
The 1970's
The 70s was arguably the golden era of children's TV. It became not so much Watch with Mother as "watch when your mother's not looking" according to the luminaries of TV interviewed here. Yet any suggestion of rebellion and anarchy seems laughable now when you look at clips of Black Beauty, Rainbow and Bagpuss. It's only with the arrival of Grange Hill and Tiswas that a glimmer of radicalism shines through. This is a gloriously nostalgic wallow in the iconic TV shows of our youth, some of which you'll recall instantly, while others are just vague memories lurking in the cobwebbed corners of your mind. The Ghosts of Motley Hall, anyone?
