  • Being a Brit male

Was sitting wiv grandson at the weekend and we were watching a real oldie - Treasure Island with Robert Newton.

Wife wandered in from shops and got a bit uptight about us wasting time 'old rubbish on telly' (could this have been cos it was the same time as Omnibus Corrie I wonder?)

I responded that this was one of the big three films all Brit males should have seen before they reach adulthood so right away she challenged me to name the others. My answers were ...

Treasure Island - this is the ultimate boys adventure.
The 39 steps (any version ) - entire country looking for a fugitive but he was actually in the right - this encoutages you to stand by your convictions.
Zulu - keeping your cool under impossible odds and fighting to the end ("because we're here lad, just us and nobody else")

She rolled about laughing and told me I'm hopelessly outdated and so are those attitudes (however she couldn't come back with a better three films) so has anyone got a more modern list of films a man needs to have seen?

Speaking as a girl, I have seen Zulu umpteen times and can recite the whole film, virtually ( mind you I do love football and have always been a tomboy).

I do agree though that it is a great man's film. My husband and sons love it.

            Watership down??????????

Just can't see it being a man film somehow.

There was one I saw years ago but it'll be non PC nowadays... all about bullfighters, they had real life matadors playing roles in the movie.

Basic plot was couple of them in a love triangle with a dark haired senorita so they were trying to impress her in the ring.
One kneeled on his jacket and fought the bull like that so his rival used a hankie!

It just went on to higher and higher levels of nerve until one got tossed over the horns

Ouch! I'm glad I don't need a hanky after a horny toss in the ring.
I'de love to be in a dark haired senorita's love triangle.

                  Danny,
I mentioned Watership Down because, although it's about bunnies, it's really about life, death and survival.

If you're looking for a propers mans' film, I've been told about a good old tale about cowboys, when men were men and cows were apparently cows.
"Brokeback Mountain" I think it's called.

Cowboys? something just popped in my head when I saw that..

Totally off topic - some foreign film where all these people went into a church but found they couldn't leave - superphobia - eventually half the village gets trapped in there - the local police drove in a flock of sheeep and I think they wouldn't leave either

That was the cowboy connection in my mind - sheep / cows

Anyone know what film it was ?
