Do you really believe the other side without provocation would launch so many ICBM's, subs and ships knowing that we would have no option to launch as well? It would break our MAD Treaty (Mutually Assured Destruction) not to mention the end of the world as we know it.

Many thanks Heather, Darren, Tex, Twoky, and Donald - I was spending my 40th birthday in Berkshire and I only came back this evening. In fact, I had more birthday cards in the post this year than any other birthday in the past!
One of them was from an old school friend and for the first time in 30 years, I spoke to him on the telephone this evening and we had a darn good natter about our school days from 30 years ago - that was like a birthday present in itself! - I have started a thread in the Schools forum where I have mentioned a bit more about it.
