It doesn't look like anyone else is going to come up with the answer, so would you care to name it, Zaba? BTW it was only series 3 and 4 that Sewell and Mower played the main characters. In series 1 and 2 it was Derren Nesbitt.

No, Softly Softly was made by the BBC....the series I am asking about was ITV. As well as George Sewell, the series starred Patrick Mower. The title was two words and was exactly the same as an actual section of the police, the first section being formed within the Met in the 1880s.

Nope, not Z Cars. This was an ITV series, based on an actual part of the police. It was canceled in favour of making its successor, The Sweeney. The first 2 series were made in 1969 and 1970, while series 3 and 4 were made in 1973 and 1974. One star of the 1973/74 series was the late George Sewell.
