Not strictly an affair. Clarence and the maid lived together, and they shared a bed, but the maid insisted on a bolster down the middle, so no hanky panky. To be honest, as the series was set in the 20s or 30s, that would have been frowned upon at that time, but as the series was made in the late 80s, it didn't raise any eyebrows on that count. The stick it got was for supposedly mocking a disability. In a similar way, Barker's series Open all Hours got some criticism for Arkwright's stutter.

You got it with Clarence. The controversy was that Clarence had extremely poor eyesight and as a lot of the humour was based around that impairment, it was felt by some that it was mocking blind people. btw the other was The Magnificent Evans with Barker playing a photographer in the 20s/30s.

He made two short lived comedies at that time. One was an a Cockney odd job man.. Clarence. . if I recall.. another was a Welsh toff.. forgotten the name.. was it the Magnificent (a name) Jones, Jenkins, Evans, Thomas, Davies. One of those?

If it was Clarence.. vaguely recall he had an affair with a maid.

Not that one, mate. If I remember correctly, it was set in the 1920s/1930s.
