I've seen a lot of Hammer but never gotten into it enough to buy the magazines or keep all the titles straight. I thought the tv series was great too.

I was looking over some old comic books recently and in Iron Man in the late 1970s there was a villain for a few issues named Hammer and the character looked exactly like Peter Cushing!

lol I've not heard of that Iron Man character before. Thanks very much. My love of Hammer, Amicus and British horror in general comes from too many late nights in the 70s and 80s staying up to watch ATV's Appointment with Fear slot and the BBC's summer saturday night's horror double bills, plus devouring all the horror film books I could find and afford.

Well done, Donald. The only one not correct is Watson in Hammer's Hound of the Baskervilles. The Cush played Holmes, but Watson was played by Andre Morell, many people's choice as the best Quatermass for his performance in the BBC serial of Quatermass and the Pit in 1958.

The Joan Collins film I saw under its UK title of I don't want to be Born. It's obviously inspired by The Exorcist.



1. I think that is Satan's Slave, a film I think I saw once on video in the early 80s prior to the VRA coming into force.

2. Did you mean character or actor names? Wasn't sure, so they are Michael Gough as the uncle, Alexander York, and Candice Glendenning as Catherine York.

3. I think that is The Skull.

4. That would be Robert Urquhart.

5. I think that is Candice Glendenning. I remember her from Blake's Seven and Angels.

You are too good staffslad.. notioned the Robert Urquart question may stump you. No I only wanted their professional names..sorry to confuse. Sitting up watching those late horrors in your youth has obviously paid dividends. You should go one of those tv quiz shows. Mastermind springs to mind as you could have Brit horror cinema as your category. Shall we add all Brit horror films up to the the 80s now as we are starting to exhaust Hammer/Amicus?

You are too kind, Donald. I fear my knowledge would be lacking in a contest like Mastermind, particularly when time in answering is so important

I don't mind taking it to the 80s as well, though I fear anything later than that will show me up as I just stopped watching British horror films after the end of the 80s. For me, their character began to change and I found I was much happier and getting more from films made in the 60s to 80s.

Anyway, I think it is my turn now, so I will come up with a few more and post them later today.

Okay, here are some:

1. There were two films produced in the UK, one in the 60s and one in the 70s, in which Sherlock Holmes tracked down Jack the Ripper. Can you name the two films? Hints...In the 60s film there is a connection to a famous blonde female Carry On star, and in the 70s film there is a connection to a famous male actor in The Sound of Music.

2. An actor probably best known for showing his backside in the Confessions series of smutty comedies made a gory horror film in the 70s that had a medical setting. Can you name film and actor?

3. In Frankenstein must be Destroyed, there was a scene that very much affected Peter Cushing and that he hated having to do. In fact, he was so upset he took leading lady Veronica Carlson to dinner to apologise. Can you describe what Cushing had to do in that scene?

4. Frankie Howard made a comedy horror set in a creepy old house in the 70s. Can you name the film?

5. What was the title of the film Hammer shot in Hong Kong in which the Cush played Van Helsing for the last time? Hint...this was also a last gasp for Hammer.

1. Correct on Murder by Decree. I liked Plummer as Holmes, though James Mason, fine actor he was, was perhaps a tad too old to play Watson. Hint for the 60s film...John Neville played Holmes. And you're right about Babs being the connection.

2. Correct on Robin Askwith. I'll give another hint...Michael Gough also starred.

3. It's a scene that I generally skip past.

4. Beccabear nailed this one as House in Nightmare Park, which is correct.

5. Correct. It was Hammer's last gasp, hoping to cash in on the popularity of martial arts films at the time. Sadly, it didn't prove enough to save them. It's worth watching as the Cush is in it and it is fairly explicit for the time.

Just a wild guess. His character had to bury his wife. Was this trauma caused by death of The Cush's own wife at the time?

A Study in Terror is correct. Obviously the title is a play on A Study in Scarlet. Actually, Neville is pretty good as Holmes, and A Study in Terror and Murder by Decree would make a good double bill.

Yes, Askwith's film is Horror Hospital, but I can't remember if he shows his backside in this one .

No, the scene in Frankenstein must be Destroyed isn't connected to Cushing's wife. She was still alive when the film was made, though not well. It's actually a scene in which Cushing as Frankenstein has to rape Veronica Carlson's character. It upset Cushing very much and, as I said, he took Carlson out to dinner as a way of apologising. Now that is class from a fine actor and more importantly a fine and gentle man.
