  • Shinty

At primary school in South Lincs we didn't play hockey like most schools did. We played Shinty. Very odd as I think it's an irish game. I didn't realise it was out of the ordinary until I started secondary school and the majority there had never heard of it. Did any one else play this at primary school instead of hockey?

    Didn't even play hockey.

Played one game in secondary school and my mate got his teeth knocked out

Ouch!! bet that hurt! Hope you weren't the weilder of the hockey stick!!!!

Shinty was rough but as kids we thought it was called shinty because of the amount of times we whacked each other on the shins with the sticks (which were like hockey sticks but not as broad,) the ball was wooden I think but whatever it was it was heavy and gave you a clout and a half if it hit you.

I remember one of my primary schools having shinty sticks, but I never remember playing it. Though we did play hockey with lightweight sticks.
