  • Charlie Brown

Charlie Brown, the American cartoon character who fails in almost everything he does. He always keeps an enthusiasm that things might go okay, but they never do. In fact, often his misfortune is orchestrated or taken advantage of by his peers. The comic strip he appeared in was called "Peanuts" which has a lot more characters. Charlie has a dog, who is almost as famous as he is - Snoopy - A white beagle who doesn't talk. Oh, and there was also a little bird, who was Snoopy's best friend - called Woodstock. In fact they were all enjoyable characters - such as Linus with his shock of unruly hair and dirty blanket, or the teachers who never spoke properly - only in an incoherent muffled mumble. Created by Charles M Shultz, the cartoon was first published in 1950, but the cartoons were still as popular as I was growing up in 1980. The character of Charlie Brown It was eventually made into an animated cartoon as well, which seemed to play continuously when I was younger. Obviously there have been many toy tie-ins such as cuddly snoopy's or the other characters as well. He's probably one of the most enduring characters in animation still around, though there have been no new strips since February 13th, 2000, when the creator passed away the day before that strip was published.

My memories are of the strip that appeared in the Daily Mail. My parents got the paper, (horrid thing), and I would always read Fred Bassett and Charlie Brown. The other memory I have is of the wonderful television animation with that unforgettable piano music.

The Observer Magazine had Peanuts strip in during the 1980s, possibly longer.

I remember The Charlie Brown & Snoopy Show was shown a lot in the 1980s - early 1990s.

In the early 1980s there was a range of Peanuts soft drinks, which didn't last too long.

Loved the cartoon. I felt sorry for the boy. And he was bald. My Mum thought he was 'ill' hence being bald....She loved Linus, hated his Sister, Lucy as she was rude and bossy and stole his blanket, she didn't like seeing Linus get the shakes after it'd been taken off him. The funniest moment was when she kicked Linus out for breaking a crayon only to discover their Mum had given birth to another boy, so she got rid of one brother only to get another....so she told Linus to come home...lol. And she nicknamed him....'Rerun', he even looked like a smaller version of Linus.

I liked Snoopy and Woodstock too. Apparently after Shultz died, his will stated no other artist could draw the characters for syndication in newspapers....

yes Lucy was always cruel to charlie never letting him kick that football.
it was a gag that ran throughout the series.

the only time charlie won anything was a motocross race and when he did win the prize was not what it was meant to be.

interesting bit of info regarding schultz after he died.
                  its his baby after all.

always liked marcie think she fancied charlie or as she called him charles.

Charlie did kick the football only once, when he was turned invisible. Saw it in the cartoon. Peppermint Pattie reminded me of a young Jody Foster. She fancied Snoopy as she always refered to him as 'the kid with the funny nose'...

Can remember the cartoon on tv and the strip in the paper.I think there was a series of slim books as well.I always found this a hard cartoon to sit down and watch.Had the same problem with top cat or wait till your father gets home.It did have a very strong american feel to it which could of been part of the reason.

took the words out of my mouth regarding peppermint patty reminding me of a young hodie foster.

i dont actually think it counts charles kicking it being invisibe.
patty suited her name as she wears a peppermint green top.

another thing peppermint p also loves motorbikes.

I agree. I liked Snoopy as much as the next kid but never got into the cartoon. Too wordy and observational for someone who was more at home with the Tom and Jerry side of things. It was like a bunch of grown ups talking.

Ah but thats the genius of it. Adult observations through children...the teacher with the funny waka waka jibberish speak was a good way of showing adults 'spoke a different language' to kids...

I really liked the Charlie Brown & Snoopy Show, as well as the Peanuts strips in The Observer magazine.

The wob-wob-wob-wob adult voices were strange & amusing at the same time.

At least twice Family Guy has poked fun at how much Brian looks like Snoopy.

About 30 years ago there was a range of tie-in drinks, with a different character for each different flavour. I don't remember them being around long though.
